Make no mistake, all this talk about his defense is a tactical retreat from the Reaves haters. They know, deep down, that he is really good and is making them look foolish. Even if he was a bad defender (he’s not), his offense is so good that he would still be a big positive for any team.
The amount of all time bad takes in this thread is astonishing.

How did Reaves look on defense? These points hardly mean anything if you're such a liabaility on defense to point where you make Kevin Huerter and D'Angelo Russell good by comparison on that side of the ball. He also only had one assist compared to 3 turnovers. How is that impressive? This basically makes him a Duncan Robinson/Buddy Hield cailber player who's unplayable when he shot isn't falling. That just futher solidifies the fact that Reaves is around 15 minute per game player who's a good, but not great shooter and any team that's expecting him to be anything than that asking for big trouble if their goal is making the playoffs.
Robinson/hield are great player there is no shame in that the only reason we are talking about a role player is because he is a laker
When are you dunces going to realize Reaves isn’t a stand in the corner spot up shooter? This is getting embarrassing.

Reading through this topic the amount of nasty overhyping was truly something to see. Reaves is a solid role player leave it at that and stop the extra stuff.

If you get hunted on defense repeatedly and your team suffers n loses for it, then you do have to question how "good" someone is/can be
Curry gets hunted, but he got better defensively, tries hard, and he wins so his team doesn't suffer as much
Scouting report is out now on Austin, on both sides of the ball. He's nice wit it tho, he'll be iight eventually

They really think he's a below-average defending role player whose defense is on-par or worse than Tyler Herro
Let's look at it logically. Reaves earned closing minutes with:
Haliburton
Reaves
Edwards
Bridges
Jackson Jr (Josh Hart against Canada)
Out of all those dudes Reaves and Haliburton are the smallest to target for switches with bigger forwards/centers. These dudes were legit sized forwards/centers and even other teammates would struggle on those switches. SGA also took other players off the dribble with little resistance. If Reaves wasn't out there Haliburton would get targeted with similar results. No one on the USA squad was impressive defensively. The team help defense was very bad and the rebounding even worse. Brunson got targeted several times with switches and was a bigger overall negative to the point that Kerr took him out and played him even less minutes. Does that mean Brunson should be a 6th man now
Reaves is not good defensively if you have him defend the post against big men or have him try to track Ja Morant/SGA, etc. He has held his own against shooting guards and some point guards and smaller forwards. He's certainly not the great defender Caruso is but he's also not as bad as Herro or D'Angelo.

Ok so what's the point??? All we are saying is Reaves is a great role player /6th man and that's not even Hate is actually a compliment many teams would love to have that.
The delusion comes when people want him to be a STAR or SUPERSTAR/All star which is just a much of Lakers fan girls trying to push that narrative down our throats.

That faco guy called him a 15 minute per game role player and you agreed with him.
Dude is cooking guys off the dribble and scoring at a 70% TS clip and you guys aren't even convinced he's a starter in this league.
Who's delusional again?

Reaves really embarrassed some people ITT
Point was to highlight that he has the potential to be All Star, a largely offense powered award. He was the most efficient scorer on Team USA, 2nd highest scorer and he did it from the bench.
Not saying this year but there's potential if he continues his meteoric rise.

While I disagree completely with your opinion I'm glad someone finally made a prediction.
Reaves will have chance to make the all-NBA because of fan votes but he is nothing but a role player 6th man off the bench who benefits from playing with high starters like LeBron or Ad.

Love me some Reaves, he has a borderline allstar talent, unfortunately for him there's loads of guards in his same tier, and several over him (Curry, Lillard & co), but he has definitely the tools (skills and IQ) to be in contention for a spot

He has all star potential if he keeps getting better next 1-2 years. I see it happening in 3 years.

Curry was 59th percentile as a defender according to D-EPM last year. Reaves was 62nd percentile.
Curry's D-RAPTOR last year was -1.2.
Reaves: +1.6.
Now do this same comparison with Reaves and other skill guards, especially ones with higher volume than him. You'll get a sense of where he stacks. Brunson was 7th percentile. Fox was 26th percentile and his D-RAPTOR is equally woeful. Lillard 32nd percentile. Herro 41st. Mann 41st. Booker 43rd. Murray 45th. Young 48th.
Let's be honest with this. Reaves is an average to good defender at the guard. He was hunted relentlessly because Steve Kerr decided to switch everything back in May according to the latest Hoop Collective. If your scheme constantly accentuates player weaknesses, everybody in the league can be made to look like a scrub.
In a switch-heavy scheme where the other defenders aren't pulling their weight and your opponent is bigger and stronger than you, you're going to bleed points defensively. Reaves and Curry are relatively slight-of-frame as guards, so you have to surround them with physicality. It's not rocket science.

This thread is filled with some of the dumbest takes possible. It is hard to believe some of you are even being serious.
Anyway, Reaves will eventually be an All-Star and I'm here for the tears.

Dude you tank your argument with your easily refutable takes. “Nothing but a 6th man bench player” yet he was already a starter and an above average one at that just this past season. He has replicated his play and even showed improvements in FIBA without Lebron and AD. You’re taking the longer road to try and diminish Austin and the Lakers instead of just looking at the stats/evidence that’s easily accessible.

Have to agree with Parsons here...he's thinking what everyone not named Laker fans are thinking...he's a good role player. The hype train may be falling down to earth after last night's clunker.

Yea, he got way too much smoke blown up his ass this summer. People just like him because he's on the Lakers and its fun to root for the pasty unathletic underdog types.

Exactly - without the 'lebron whistle' he's a marginal player. He needs those bad calls to get to the line.

Lakers fanbase is enormous so undoubtedly there will be some morons amongst us. I think the more experienced fans with even a shred of brains didn't assume Reaves would turn into some all star. But he's a damn good rotation player who can be that 4th guy on a championship team.
