Ben Simmons: I'm A Point Guard

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Sep 19, 2023 1:04 pm

Ben Simmons is at the tail-end of what many experts said would be an 18-month recovery from back surgery. Simmons is expected to be 100% by November. When he is, the Brooklyn Nets versatile player expects to be the team's lead guard again. Simmons said he's gotten assurances from Nets coach Jacque Vaughn that he'll be running the offense again too.

“That’s what I know. As much as people would try to put me (at power forward). Everyone’s a GM in their head. I’m a point guard,” Simmons said. “So, I think with the team we have I think it’s constructed well for us to have a good run.

“Get ready for a great year. I think it’s going to be exciting. We’re going to have a lot of fun and get back to Brooklyn basketball.”

Simmons also knows he's disappointed some people over the last few years. He's not making any excuses though, as he owns it's on him to win people over again.

“I’d say (the hardest part was) not be able to do your job to the fullest. I never have excuses, I never tried to say anything about different things going on. But I was dealing with an injury at the time, so I did what I could in the moment,” Simmons said. “And I owe it to everybody, the fans and everybody, to get back to where I need to be. That’s what I did this summer to get back.”

He should decline interviews until he has achieved something. It is painful to hear about him all the time.

Maybe he should learn how to shoot a free throw or any shot further than 5 feet from the basket before he declares himself anything.

He is barely even a basketball player as of now.

Jazz should trade Sexton, THT, and Olynyk for Ben, Sharpe, and a future first rounder. Nets need to attach a young asset and future FRP to dump Simmons.

Can't be a point guard if he can't or won't score.

I agree, not the time for these

But that said, it wasn't as bad as the headline you see here.

This was in The NY post (of all papers) and they were more generous than the WireTap aggregator.

Their headline wasn't "I'm a point guard," but rather “ 'I owe it to everybody' to regain All Star form”

He's a short center. Maybe he can switch onto opposing guards on defense, which is nice. But he has the shot making ability of Lou Amundson.

I know I'm in the extreme minority but I'm expecting him to have a bounce back season. Not returning to all star level form but being a strong defensive presence and elite playmaker. If he finally begins to shoot those open mid range shots like he does in those Summer open runs he could really take off. I know I sound crazy so don't @ me. Trust me, I thought he was soft as baby boo boo too. But if he was actually injured that would explain a few more things. Either way, I just hope he actually proves it to help take my B-Squad Nets to new heights. This is his last chance though for sure.

I'm worried about this team, Ben with mikal and cam could turn out to be deadly on both ends which will be awful for team.

There are ZERO good PG's in the NBA with a lower USG% than Ben Simmons. Just an observation; I don't really care how he labels himself.

So he brings the ball up court and passes 100% of the time cuz he can't shoot! Easy for opposing teams to figure that out...only calling himself a point guard because he's not a shooting guard and doesn't want to body up underneath

Time is a flat circle.
2025-2026 Philadelphia 76ers:

Edgecombe/Grimes/Lowry
Maxey/Edwards/Terry
Oubre/Watford
George/Barlow/Walker/Broome
Embiid/Drummond/Bona

once upon a time your mom was hot... does that still make her hot now? Ben sucks. What happened years ago doesn't make that any different.

Isn’t that what a PG does? I remember the 76ers bringing in other guards to move Ben Simmons to other positions and it just doesn’t work.
In the Nets case, they guaranteed starters are Mikal, Cam J, and Clax. Simmons is most likely going to start but the other starter is going to be between, Spence, Royce and DFS. Nets can have 4 well above average defenders on the floor with decent shooting and young fresh legs to run up and down the court. Simmons can play point on offense and guard anyone in transition and match up with opposing 1-4’s in a half court set. with Clax as the last line of defense, the Nets can be an interesting team

Yep, ownership around the league are chomping at the bit to kick him out of the NBA if he doesn't perform spectacularly given his perceived diva attitude.

He misjudged his value and used his rope too early in his career. Ownership will undoubtedly fight bite back with a guy of his skill level.
