There is a real chance Milwaukee won't be able to retain Giannis. Jrue is 33, Middleton looked like he has started to decline early at 31, and Lopez is 35. That team isn't getting better. Giannis wants to win championships.
There aren't a whole lot of teams that can offer valuable young players while also maintaining the talent to win a championship....Believe it or not the Magic are one of them.
In all likelihood Milwaukee will be able to figure out how to retool this team on the fly, but if there is an injury or serious decline, they could lose their standing in the east before they are able to refresh, and if they can't build around Giannis, chances are he will want to go somewhere that can.
This post didn't age well.
Really? Milwaukee has now pushed their chips towards the middle. They have zero tradeable draft picks and Lillard is 33 and owed a small country's GDP, Middleton is 32, and Lopez is 35.
This move may (or may not) have made them better, but the Bucks have two guaranteed years of Giannis. To me this is about making the most of those two years.
One of the negatives of moving Holiday for Dame is they lose roster flexibility, Lopez has 2 years, Middleton 3 years, Jrue 2 years...maybe they could have convinced a star Giannis wasnted to play with to come after Jrue's and Lopez combined $60M came off the books...now they will be very limited 4 years of Lillard and with just the 24M coming off and a giant hole at center.
To me this trade makes it more likely Giannis leaves in two years...and since they are all in, they wont want to trade him, could be forced into a sign and trade, where they get litlte back. If age and salary commitments are Milwaukee's problems, neither were helped in this deal.
