Will/Should Demar Derozan get into the HOF?

Post#1 » by raptorforlife88 » Thu Sep 21, 2023 2:14 pm

When you consider his career, it's not really one you would expect to make the HOF. He's doesn't have the best advanced stats, or a championship. His Raptors stretch was his best in terms of playoff success, but he usually played poorly in the playoffs. He's closer to a Joe Johnson than any of the truly elite guys.

But what he does have is longevity, consistency, and being healthy basically all the time.

As a result of that and his now genuinely elite scoring ability he's 39th all time in points in the NBA. Everyone around that range until Lamarcus Aldridge is either in or will get into the HOF. Aldridge is 46th and won't make it, but Demar has a bunch of seasons to go still.

He got 1800 points last year, his scoring game is likely to age well cause it's not based on athleticism. He averaged 24 a game last year. If he conservatively managed to get 4000ish more points in his career he will be at around 26000. Which should land him right around 25th all time. There is absolutely no one who has not made the HOF with that many points.

Will he make it? Should he?

He's going to get in.

He's going to retire with around 26,000-28,000 career points. One of the leading scorers in the 2010's, 6x allstar, 3x all NBA. How many guys with his resume don't get in?

He's the modern day Mitch Richmond.

He will because of his longevity. He's a modern iron man player who plays at least 70-75 games almost every year.

6 all-star appearances, an olympic gold medal and likely will finish top 25 on the all-time scoring list (currently ranked 44th with 21,685 points...with 2 more years of strong play he likely finishes with around 25,000 points at the minimum).

That being said, as a Raptor fan, if Derozan gets in and Lowry doesn't it would be a travesty because it was obvious that Lowry was the team's best player circa 2014-2018 during the Lowry-Derozan era.

Does he deserve to make it? I think it's borderline. He's in that Mitch Richmond, Adrian Dantley, Cheeks tier of players who were never superstar players that had playoff success, but were able to get in.

I personally would like to see guys like Chauncy, Lowry, Price, and Webber get in before Derozan ever does.

Will he? Yes.

Should he? No.

Basketball HOF has ridiculously low standards compared to baseball and football.

Yeah, I think the total career point will be the deciding factor in his favor. From the eligible players above 20,000 points only two aren't in the HOF: Tom Chambers and Antawn Jamison. And they are barely above 20k. Aldridge and Joe Johnson also are above 20k, but aren't eligible yet. I think Aldridge will get in, Johnson could join Chambers and Jamison.

But if DeMar gets to 25,000 points, and he should get there except for injuries, he will definitely get in.

Should? I'm not sure. I usually have pretty high standards for the HOF and DeRozan is something like a tough case.

He will get in, which is sad to me in the sense of it being more a longevity award than a quality award. Dude was a massive playoff choker and took forever to become more than empty stats. Nice guy, hard worker but a slow learner on the court.

I tend to wish we had an NBA HoF that had more stringent criteria so we could celebrate greatness. If you acknowledge that the HoF is more of a career achievement award, then it's pretty clear that Demar should get in based on counting stats.

I'll just copy/paste this:

Will he? Yes.

Should he? No.

Basketball HOF has ridiculously low standards compared to baseball and football.

Will and shouldn't.

Could be said of most nice things that other people get and we don't.

He will get in point total will get him there . He was all star and most part could get a team to the playoffs with decent roster . He’s little above average and that’s enough for HoF

Lamarcus Aldridge class player. No business in HOF.

Derozan will likely be a HOFer. He likely shouldn’t be.

Its basketball HOF.

Staying in the East he can makw more all star games.

He has 2 gold medals and can pad that with a world championship or 2 since the top 20 players are international or skip.

He can start to ring chase in 4 more yrs or so to close out a career

Important to note this is the basketball HOF.

In addition to NBA accolades:

- Pac 10 Tournament MVP
- PAC 10 All Freshman Team
- McDonalds AA
- Parade All-American (2008)

He was also a very successful AAU player...I believe he won numerous championships with the Compton Magic

I say no and no.

I think we are going to see a backlash from the HoF voters and they are going to realize the error of their ways and are going to make it more difficult to get in over the next decade or two

They should raze the Hall if he gets in tbh. He has 2 years in his career with a positive +/-, and I don't know if he's ever been a top-5 player on any of his teams during the postseason.
Also, something that might surprise people. I think when it comes to athleticism, agility, physical attributes and skill I rate LeBron only in the top 50.

Also just way more players, which makes it more common for some great players to be left out.

Each MLB team carries 26 players and each NFL team carries 53 players while NBA teams carry 15 players.

MLB all-star games feature 34 players, NFL pro-bowl games feature 110 players while the NBA only features 24 players.

Usually it's about 4-5 former NBA players inducted every year, so it's not like it's a crazy amount. It's just that the league itself is small comparatively.
