No, I like Jordan Walsh. I love guys who play with energy. It's just that he's going to commit lots of fouls. He needs to channel his energy to avoid dumb fouls.

Sure it's better to avoid silly fouls but this isn't going to make or break his career. Jaren Jackson Junior is the reigning DPOY and fouls more than anybody else in the league (and a lot of them are dumb) for example. Excessive fouling is only a problem for top of the rotation guys that play 25+ minutes a night because they are the only ones to play enough to be affected by foul trouble. So the Celtics would be very lucky if Walsh's career ever progresses to the point where him fouling too much is an issue.

It's certainly something worth keeping an eye on.

I just did the math, and it's interesting. In college last season, he had 4.3 fouls per 36 mins.

Across 5 summer league games this year? 4.3 fouls per 36 mins. Kind of wild that it's the same exact number haha.

Now the question is, is that number bad? The short answer? Yes, it's kind of bad.

Last season, the only guys on our team who averaged more fouls per 36 mins were Vonleh (who was obviously a foul machine and has been out of the league since January) and Griffin (who was not very good defensively overall, didn't play much for us and is now considering retirement.

Kornet was next highest on the team in fouls per 36 mins with 3.6, so a good amount lower than Walsh. And bigs typically foul more than wings.

Just comparing him to wings...

Fouls per 36 mins:
Walsh: 4.3
Tatum: 2.1
Brissett: 2.6
Svi: 1.8
JB: 2.6
Hauser: 2.8

So yeah. It's certainly something Walsh needs to work on. But it's also a small sample size we have of Walsh. Only 1 season of college ball (when he was only 18 yrs old for pretty much the whole season, playing against a lot of guys who were 21-23 yrs old) and a small 5 game sample at Summer League.

Walsh looks freakishly long. Would be useful pressuring ballhandlers and chasing shooters.

Yup - 7'2" wingspan.

That's a good amount of wingspan. How tall is?
Supposed to be a pretty good 2ndary Ballhandler too?

He's 6'7".

His ball handling and ability to create off the dribble, bring the ball up the floor is decent - especially for a 19 yr old with a 7'2" wingspan.

His main value on offense is just being a hustle/energy guy, crashing the offensive boards, making some good cuts to the basket, occasionally hitting a spot up 3 or attacking a closeout, pushing the pace - either by leading the break or finishing on it.

Not really great at anything on offense but pretty good at a bunch of things. And he's still so young, he should keep getting better..

He's better and has more upside as a defender..

Good dude who gives off some upbeat, positive energy.

Love how he did so much stuff to help in the community this summer, too.

I'd like to see this Kid make it into the Regular Rotation.

I hope he will too, but doubt it’s this year.
He’s got amazing wingspan — his arms keep going for days — and no doubt will have some exciting moments making things happen on defense/in transition, but he’s gotta add some strength so he doesn’t just get swallowed up every time he touches the ball on the perimeter. Pivot! Swing those elbows! GRRRRR!!!

It's possible.

On one hand, I feel like he's a year away. Like, he's only 19. We have more experienced guys in that spot (Stevens, Brissett) so Walsh will probably get some minutes here and there but mostly garbage time, perhaps he'll play more games for Maine than he does for Boston.

And realistically, I'm thinking that year 2 for him (24-25 season) he'll be able to crack that 8 or 9 man rotation consistently. By using this season here for learning and development - to prepare him to be a rotation guy next season.

With that being said, he seems like a very hard worker - and guys at that age (18-20) often develop really quickly..and I suppose it's not that farfetched that he could beat Brissett and Stevens for rotation minutes - even this season.

The thing Walsh seems to bring that's a little bit different than those other 2 guys is the havoc that he wreaks as a help defender - he's tenacious and really alert off ball, good at knowing when to attack the ball handler and double him to knock the ball away and force turnovers - that combined with his 7'2" wingspan is a really intriguing combination since those long arms enable him to reach balls that most guys can't (as a help defender)..plus his ability to turn defense into offense by being able to handle the ball in the open floor pretty well.

Not a bold prediction: He'll play more minutes for Maine Cs than Boston Cs.

Absolutely. No where near a good enough shooter and probably not strong enough yet. That said, really high on him. Great attitude, intangibles and measurements. Will definitely go to the expo to see him when he’s in Portland.
