We might be seeing a bit of spite from the Blazers here with how insane the lowball offers were early on. I don't think they are trying to piss Dame off by sending him elsewhere I think they were upset with Miami trying to take advantage early on.
Keep in mind they seem hellbent on sending Dame anywhere else unless Miami starts really putting their best offer forward.
I want to think I’m wrong, but I think a lot of this talk of the Blazers talking to other teams, not talking to Miami, etc… I think it’s kinda bull-ish. I don’t even think they’re hell bent on sending Dame elsewhere, I think Cronin is doing everything he can to not get bullied and pushed around by Riley, but knowing how the league works and how teams use media spokespeople now… all this stuff of “Blazers won’t work with Miami and talking to multiple other teams about Dame trades…”. This just reminds me of pre-draft talks when the Blazers were in “talks” for guys like Zion for the #3, offering big deals for Bam or Bridges…. It feels like they’re more worried about winning the media war then the actual war.
I legit will not be surprised if the deal ends up just Portland and Miami, Blazers get Lowry, Jovic and 2 firsts for Dame. Followed by a pitiful Cronin press conference where he says they exhausted every possible opportunity but their hands were tied… blah blah blah (even if it’s true).
Cronin doesn’t want to get showed up by Riley. That’s what ALL this is (with the Ayton stuff esp). They only way he’s going to go toe to toe with Riley is take this into the season. Let it get messy and uncomfortable. The good GMs will do that. Morey, Whitsitt, Riley, Ainge… they will do that. Morey doesn’t care if a player sits out, Whitsitt was willing to take PR heat if it made for a good team, Riley and Ainge would let a franchise “piller” walk or trade them for the betterment of a franchise.
Cronin gives me zero confidence he has it in him to make stuff that messy and uncomfortable. I think he will reason with himself “well at least we got this resolved before camp”, even if it’s a bad deal.
