Franchises simply can`t block players from competing in FIBA Basketball anymore.

Besides why would you want to piss off your best player? NBA stars break contracts and change teams pretty easily these days.

If there was ever a guy who shouldn’t play competitively in the off-season ever it’s Joel embiid. He can’t even get on his knees to thank God because he might tear a ligament.

He’s been working out at Ucla, and then when runs start he just watches.he can’t even handle pickup, why would he play every other day in a tournament.

USA is more desperate even though it has the best league in the world and the deepest talent pool. I think both basketball federations are pathetic.

Embiid, Siakam and Koloko is a hell of an interior defense for Cameroon.

Lol. This is actually possible, because Canada can naturalize one foreign player. And the missing piece on that roster is a legit center.

Joining Canada to beat Lebron, KD & Steph would be the ultimate troll move by Embiid…. he would become legendary.

Play for Cameroon or don't play at all.

He can do the same playing for France. i think he trolls the USA indeed and play for the stronger France (rather than Cameroon). However, money (and image and branding) talks so US i feel has the inside track— and especially after embarrassing World Cup stints will go hard at Embiid, who plays the position where the Americans are weakest at.

Embiid is from French Cameroon. Has relatives in France, and speaks French. So he does have some connections to France.

By such arbitrary classification standards, Americans can play for any number of countries, South Americans can play for Spain or France and Indians can play for Britain.

I want him to play for Cameroon if only because I'd like to see him and Siakam on the same team. I think that combination would do great especially in FIBA play.

I was just pointing out that it's incorrect to say that he has no connections at all to France.

Canada hates Embiid because of our recent playoff history with Philly but if this ever happened, he'd have a statue built beside Nash, Lowry and Kawhii lol

Maybe he could claim Canada as a Quebecer, since he speaks French...

You clearly don’t know the Fiba rules.

Foreign-born players with bloodline connection with the country they want to represent must prove their legal nationality through a passport obtained before turning age 16, regardless of any local laws that deem that nationality as having existed before that time.
Players who obtained their passport afterwards can still play but they would be considered as "naturalized" players by FIBA rather than as a local. FIBA allows one naturalized player to be on the roster of a national team per game.

I never said it’s illegal. It is however meaningless.

France is giving Embiid until October 10th to make a commitment, but the oft-injured Embiid can't make a reliable commitment to play 65 regular season NBA games, the minimum threshold for awards, let alone make a commitment to play a full NBA season plus playoffs plus summer Olympic season.

I don't really follow amateur sports, but aren't there lots of players who play for a country for which they don't have citizenship? Can someone help me with this answer?

Υeah every country is allowed one naturalised player, which can be basically anyone from anywhere, usually Americans. They just give them a passport.

Some countries refuse to have one, I think from memory France never had one, but I might be wrong. If anything they have bigs coming out their butt between Gober/Wemby/Fall/Lesort and a couple of others, I understand why the players might be pissed off if they just give away a spot to someone completely out of the system and with no real ties to the country. I wouldn't do it, if you have an extra spot just give it to a young guy like Sarr.

Then again this France team looked kinda cooked in the World Cup, so maybe they'll try something radical.

Wrong

It was a long time ago but

Howard Carter
Ronnie Smith
Dwayne Scholten
Crawford Palmer
Tariq Kirksay

Just for the US born

But we're not Spain or some Eastern European countries that's for sure

So NO to Embiid and just move on
