Interesting will be relegated to center and maybe some spot 4. Good to have another stretch option just in case.

Outside of Javonte Green (who may be too hurt or maybe out of price range anyways), Gay or Snell were my next hopes for the 14th spot.

DunKirk strikes again.

Original Shams tweet about the signing seems to indicate that this is a training deal. That’s necessary context.

I read it was a 1 year deal AND that he would be competing for a roster spot.... :dontknow:

That final phrase is the tell. If it were a guaranteed deal, Gay would not be competing for the roster spot. Shams’ job of breaking news is secondary to his work of doing agents favors. The original, misleading phrasing of the Gay signing tweet is one example among many.

Same age as David West last year with us. Same age as Carmelo last year with lakers when he was a positive.

Rudy Gay continues to be a positive impact in limited minutes, so I think as a 3rd string PF and 4th/5th string center he can definitely be a good signing. Not to mention he has always been close with Steph.

Definitely reads as a training camp invite

Good veteran presence. Turned into a glue guy under Pop. Doesn't turn it over much. Rebounds. Makes free throws, doesn't foul a ton. I just think he's become a high IQ player that understands winning basketball.

His shot seems totally done last 2 years, but I could see him winning the 14th spot and understanding our offense pretty quickly.

It is very odd reporting. Is it an E10 or a guaranteed deal?

This says a lot about their faith in Kuminga.. virtually none. If Gay signed a legit (non-E10) deal, there's a good chance he breaks camp with a role, and that comes directly at Kuminga's expense

If it is E10, still doesnt bode well that we're looking for experience at the 4... tweets do indicate that its either an E10 or non gtd deal, because if he did sign a guaranteed deal, he wouldnt be competing for a roster spot, he'd have it. That said, its also possible that Woj/Shams are treating it like any other team, where a vet min signing would be competing for a roster spot... but here, right now, a vet min signing is basically a full MLE to Lacob

Cant believe they dont see Garuba as a 4! Maybe this will put an end to those ugly depth charts with Garuba at the PF slot.. at least on this board

Another note: I do expect this to be a non-gtd contract but not E10. Gay would effectively be taking the 14th spot temporarily to allow E10 signings, and then the preseason is effectively tryouts between a handful of guys. Which means its more likely to be a bunch of no-namers and scrap heap finds than any of the recognizeable names being thrown around.. so guys like Will Barton seem less likely, while its very likely we see a bunch of 2-3 year NBA vet retreads being invited in, as they can audition for the 14th spot OR one of our 2-ways
