Then let him walk. The guy will be 34 entering next year.

I doubt we give him that much. 4yr 50 would seem pretty fair to me. If he wants to chase they money. I bet the yankees will have a 5yr/75 million dollar offer waiting.

You wish. The Yankees aren't going to give 5 years at that price to a third basemen who just had the best year of his career.

Hopefully the Red Sox get suckered into signing him. It only goes downhill from here for Lowell.

The Red Sox just booked their banner hanging day, April 11th when the Yankees come to town.

Oh please. Have the redsox overpaid to keep any of their FAs in recent years?? The sox will make an offer. If he doesnt accept it. They will most likely move on.

I haven't seen the schedule for next season. Is that opening day for Fenway?

Actually opening day is the 8th against the Tigers as of right now. So they will raise the banner against the Tigers.

you may not have overpaid to keep your own but you've sure made some ludicrous offers to sign some F/A on the open market.

Hell ya! Now comes another dilemma! What the hell do I buy? I can't figure out of I want a shirt and hoodie or just the hoodie. Getting a hat for sure (looks a lot better than the 2004 hat IMO), but other than that I pretty much want everything and don't have a lot to spend.

True, But none of those guys were 34 years old. The red sox are always trying to sign guys in 27-31 range so they are still in their prime through most if not all of their contract.

Bingo. Lowell won't get any better, and he might get a lot worse. I still don't get why he was MVP over Papelbon, or hell even 'Tek (who did an amazing job handling the pitchers).

Well the Sox have to figure out what type of drop are we talking about from Mike Lowell now to Mike Lowell 4 years from now. He seems to take care of his body, so I don't really expect Mike Lowell to really cause a problem to himself. There was talk before he came to Boston that Lowell had lost bat speed, not sure it was that or he just sucked.

Should be interesting.

33 year olds coming off career years and World Series MVPs are money pits.

The Sox said they won't offer more than two years. Lowell success down the stretch and in the playoffs added a third year to their offer. Lowell has said he wants to stay in Boston and if they offer him a fair contract, he'd stay. So a 3 year/$42 million contract with an option for the fourth year is "fair" but it all depends on how Mikey feels about staying in Boston. mahalo

I hate the redsox with a passion, but they are really a great team. Congrats to the redsox winning the world series.
