Isaiah Livers - another injury

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Mon Oct 2, 2023 3:04 pm

From James Edwards:
Pistons announce Isaiah Livers suffered a grade-3 ankle sprain recently and will be out 6-8 weeks.

Yikes. This guy can’t catch a break. Could be our best all around wing, but we never will know. This doesn’t just hurt his availability, but also his development.

If he's our best all-around wing, then we belong in the G-league.

What wing on our roster has a better floor on both sides of the ball than Livers? But, yeah, if your point is that we have bottom five wing talent in the league well, yeah, we do.

We certainly haven’t seen the best of Livers. I totally disagree with the g-league comment, but of course I’m assuming a 100% healthy Livers. He can shoot better than everyone except Bogdonovich, and he plays D better than everyone except Ausar and Stewart. He’s not making any AllStar teams but he’s a solid all around player. When healthy.

That's unfortunate, but not really surprising. We desperately need a 3/4 that is a true 2way player, but I have zero faith in Livers to play a full nba season.

Livers is shaping up to be a sad coulda-been story. Any minutes he would have taken from Bagley at the 4 would have been a blessing in terms of on-court awareness, but it just doesn’t seem to be meant to be.

We haven't seen enough of him to make proclamations of either of these extremes (good or bad).

Bogey, Harris, and Burks are all better shooters. I want to believe Cade joins that list this year. And wishful thinking is Ivey does as well.

Defensively it's hard to tell because our team defense was so bad last year. There were definitely times where it appeared that Livers got lost / lost his man but that could have also been due to bad rotations by his teammates.

I wish he were 3-4 inches taller. As a team we are really, really good at finding guys who are 6'6 to 6-8 in height but terrible at finding guys who fit an ideal power forward mold.

I want him to be the guy that some folks are touting but I honestly haven't seen it with the eye test in games. I even went so far as to scan the game logs in case I missed a trend somewhere. He's been... ok?

Some people are just snakebit. Doesn't matter the profession. Doesn't ’t matter wealth, status, or intelligence.

Roll out of bed, step on a nail.

Rinse, wash, repeat.

Livers is that guy. Damn.

Get him out of DETROIT! I think Livers is purposely trying to get hurt

I thought we got a steal when we drafted him but at this point you can't count on him being available consistently. I think Weaver was right to draft him where he did but the health risk has turned out worse than expected.

I honestly don't see in Livers what some others do. He showed flashes of defense and reliable shooting although I feel his defense is overrated but he's a replacement level player on just about every roster. He only got run here because there was nobody better and even with the opportunity on a skeleton roster he never ran with it, add in the constant injuries and he has all the look of a guy that will be out of the league in a few years.

I like the guy, seems like a great guy, and appreciate the hustle but I don't see a long term fit more than a 9th or 10th man type on what is supposed to be a good team in the next few years and going forward.

Okay. I will be the first to admit that I am not as high as some are on Livers but dude...

To the folks saying that we should be taking that G-League guy Omoruyi over him? Come on.

He may very well amount to nothing. Time is running out for him. But an ankle injury now is not his death knell as a Piston. He'll come back and play out the year; after which time he'll either be brought back or he won't.

If this gives us room for Diallo, let's re-sign Diallo.
He's not a shooter, but he can show up, play, defend.
If it doesn't, Ausar better be Ausum right out the gate.

He never got a big contract. He desperately needs to stay healthy. Would have been a mid first round pick, but got injured during his last year at Michigan.

No. Diallo is not a guy that you want on a good team and we don't need him taking minutes away from players we need to develop.
Ausar should get 100% of the minutes that Diallo would get if he were signed; because Ausar is an upgraded version of Diallo in every way.

There's a reason he's still unsigned. Hard pass.

Diallo's fine off the bench. He's actually a teeny bit younger than Livers, if your development case is to keep Livers around. Livers or Diallo was in 10th man territory barring injury or suckitude, because we've got Ausar, Burks, and Harris as wing players. Ausar shows a lot of promise, but he hasn't played an NBA minute yet.

"He's not a shooter" is enough to ruin his value as an NBA player. That's presumably why he's still unsigned, and it's why he wasn't able to consistently remain in the rotation last season of the league's least-winningest team.

He can't really defend all that much either, for what it's worth. Don't conflate steals with good defense; his defensive IQ is not good, by any means.

Diallo has no future with the Pistons. Livers is still undecided.

The only guys we should have on the team are folks we believe have future potential with our club or vets to fill in functional gaps, etc. Diallo doesn't fit either of these categories.

He's simply a body to eat up minutes and we don't have minutes to give him.
