These are the guys we signed to fill out the roster, with age in parenthesis:
Svi Mykhailiuk (26)
Oshae Brissett (25)
Dalano Banton (23)
Lamar Stevens (26)
Wenyen Gabriel (26)

These are the other guys in that 7th-15th man part of the roster who are returning players..
Pritchard (25)
Hauser (25)
Kornet (28)

Now, let's look at some guys we were rumored to be interested in or could have signed as free agents but did not sign them (age in parenthesis)
Danny Green (36)
John Wall (33)
Blake Griffin (34)
TJ Warren (30)
Austin Rivers (31)
JaMychal Green (33)
Bismack Biyombo (31)
Will Barton (32)
Terrence Ross (32)
Reggie Bullock (32)
Javonte Green (30)
Ish Smith (35)
Taj Gibson (38)
Cam Payne (29)
Dwight Howard (37)
Demarcus Cousins (33)
Glenn Robinson III (29)

The takeaway? Age 25 or 26 is the sweet spot. If you're 23 or 24 (Banton turns 24 soon) that's ok if you've got some upside. If you're 28, that's ok if you've already been here for awhile. But if you're over the age of 28, you don't have a shot in hell at getting signed by us to be a deep bench piece.

Last year is in the past of course, but Blake and Gallo both on the tailend of their careers were free agent signings under Brad.

Yes. But perhaps Brad feels like those signings didn't turn out to great. Gallo - like you said, he was old, tail end of his career, already tore his ACL earlier in his career..and then tears his ACL before the season even started.

Griffin, he was a decent player on the court for us. But there was clearly times during the season where he was winded, most of his athleticism he had earlier in his career was gone and his body only allowed to him to play about 40 games. Gabriel on the other hand played about 60 games last season for the Lakers, has young legs. Perhaps Brad is thinking that from a 3rd big, he wants someone whose body can handle more of a workload this season, if need be.

Perhaps Brad is now thinking, you get guys in the prime of their career - or just about to enter their prime. Around age 25-26. So there is less wear and tear on their body, less injuries that have been suffered over a 10+ year career, and higher chance that the player develops more to their game in Boston and perhaps stays in Boston for 2+ seasons, rather than just 1 season where his body can only handle 40 games and then he retires cause his body can't handle any more.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

He may have been, until the Jrue trade. Too much talent and excitement now to hold onto bad feelings.

Me too! :)

Memokerobi wrote:-How will these lineups compare? Jrue-White-Jaylen-Tatum-Porz vs Jrue-White-Jaylen-Tatum-Horford. I think there is a good chance that the latter is a really good five and might close games in the playoffs

Hmmm, interesting. Maybe. But I feel like (especially with the way Brad, Mazzulla and company have talked about Porzingis) they really see him as a guy who can help fix the late game offensive execution issues we have had ever since the 2018 playoffs. They've talked about how Porzingis gives us this added dimension offensively, how he changes the geometry of the court, how he can shoot the 3 but also post up, can diversify our offense, create different looks to give a defense, exploit mismatches, etc.

Then you have Jrue, a PG who can be the one to settle us down, be the calm, cool collected guy running the offense, getting us into the right set, the guy who will go and get the ball if it's late in a close game and the possession starts breaking down.

I think they will both be in there late in games.

IMO, it comes down to whether it's white or Al in the game late. I think (at least in the playoffs) it will probably be Al, a lot of the times. Depends on who we're playing, but if we're facing the Bucks, we'll want Al defending Giannis, if we're facing the Sixers, we'll want Al defending Giannis. If we're facing Miami, we'll probably want Al defending Bam. If we're facing Denver, we'll probably want double bigs to match up with Jokic/Gordon. Plus, I saw a stat the other day that indicated Al has posted a crazy high shooting percentage during the clutch over the past few years.

Memokerobi wrote:-Can Pritchard and/or Hauser make the leap to be in the playoff rotation consistently? Can we scheme our defense so that we can survive with these guys out there in big games?

Yup, definitely a key question to watch out for.

Also, this leads to a point I was thinking of - can we play both Pritchard and Hauser at the same time? Think about it. 2 years ago, Hauser was in g league and pretty much never got any meaningful minutes. Last season, Hauser was in the regular rotation for the first couple of months, then he started to shoot cold to Pritchard got those minutes. Then Hauser was put back in the rotation and Pritchard was benched again (and asked for a trade).

We never really saw them both in the rotation at the same time. If we did, it was only a game or 2 here or there - it wasn't consistent (unless I'm remembering wrong). I feel like we had our top 7 guys..and then we had either Grant, Hauser or Pritchard as the 8th man and that's it. And early in the season when Rob was out, we had both Hauser and Grant in the rotation but not Pritchard.

There may have been some games here and there where Pritchard was in when 2 (or more) of our guards were out in the same game..and perhaps Hauser was also in the rotation. But I feel like a lot of those games (where Pritchard was playing because we had guards out) was when Hauser was benched during mid-season.

So the question is, given the limitations that both Hauser and Pritchard have defensively (and in terms of their athleticism) will we play them at the same time off the bench consistently this season? I think many people are penciling in Hauser as the 7th man and Pritchard as the 8th man. I'm not so sure Mazzulla will do that, given what I just mentioned.

I don't want to overthink it, but spit balling here..perhaps in the rotation we have 1 guy from the good shooter but questionable defense and might also be lacking in size/athleticism/strength/rebounding (Hauser, Pritchard, Svi) and we have 1 guy from the questionable shooting but good in other areas such as defense, strength, athleticism, size, playmaking, rebounding (Banton, Walsh, Brissett, Stevens).

So maybe 1 guy from the shooting bucket and 1 guy from the defense bucket. Those are your 7th and 8th man. Then whoever wins the battle for the 3rd big spot between Gabriel and Kornet (Queta as the darkhorse) is the 9th man. And that's it - those are your 9 rotation players. Everyone else can fight for minutes and get a shot at some minutes here or there as the season goes on and as additional depth is needed due to injury, guys resting, etc.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

Agree mostly that the thought process makes sense. The only thing I'd add to it is I'm not sure if we can tell a lot from one off-season of older player additions and one of guys in their years just entering their primes. Just not enough information to go by. It could be a total coincidence, it could be a change in philosophy, it could be a side effect of player-type rather than age and that was who was available. A lot of "perhaps' " in the equation. If it is a change in philosophy I like it from the standpoint of needing guys in this salary range going forward to play meaningful minutes, and if we become a destination where guys can develop, get opportunities to actually play, and be part of a winning team (a recipe for getting larger guaranteed money) then it stands to benefit us the next off-season when we're looking for similar guys since you can't do long-term contracts on these vet min. deals. It's going to be a revolving door of them, especially if we're trading most of the draft picks away.

It gave the Celtics a chance at a title. They weren't winning with the same core of Smart Brown and Tatum coming back. I get that no one does "winning plays" like Marcus but he also can shoot the team out of games.

That's also my suspicion.

Interesting that we shipped out twice defense first guys and one offense first guy in exchange for two two-way guys. Now the top 6 are high level shooters and defenders, next 2 are shooters, and most if of the rest can defend. Better to have flawed specialist as reserve and all around guys as the core, rather than vice versa. I think Brad has this vision while Ainge was too into flawed guys as an undervalued commodity.

And thank god. I still stand by the fact he was a big reason for this team being good but also a big reason why they never got over the hump.

When the Celtics last won a championship they had veterans like James Posey and PJ Brown. They made need that. I still think a guy like Danny Green would have been perfect for the Celtics as he had Championship experience.

I mainly agree with this but also think they needed the offense and he just didn’t has as much as they needed.

Someone out of the Smart/Al/Grant/Rob/etc crew had to score so he would step in. Didn’t work for the big prize but kudos in my book for going after it.

Nah. If he was defense first, and NOT starting and finishing, then maybe. We will never reach our max potential as a team with a player finishing that’s a liability on offense. Teams guard our team different with Smart, knowing he can’t shoot. Now, with our present lineup, good luck double teamming JT and brown haha.

Well said. Pick your poison genuinely now, no holidays on defence (bdum tish). And our two primary bigs are long threats too

It's not just doubleing the Js. White, Jrue, Js, Titus Zingus can all create and score. With Smart and RW in the lineup there's potentially 2 players that u can chill off. Now there's literally nobody you can ignore. Our D wont be better. I think our potential is in our offence. Hopefully Jrue doesnt shoot 20% on threes this year
