Wow, looks like the Braves are goin into the rebuilding stage. But I still would've kept hold of Edgar Renteria. He'll bat a solid .300 every season and will keep you in games on both dimensions of the game offensively and defensively.

The Tigers gave up right-hander Jair Jurrjens, who showed signs of promise last season, and minor league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.

"We are excited to add an All-Star-caliber shortstop in Edgar Renteria to the Tigers organization," Detroit president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. "Edgar is a quality player, proven winner and tremendous leader that solidifies our infield."

It was the first major trade for new Braves GM Frank Wren, who took over when John Schuerholz stepped aside this month to become team president.

Renteria, a five-time All-Star, has a .291 career batting average over 12 seasons. The deal reunites him with Detroit manager Jim Leyland, who was in charge when Renteria and the Marlins won the World Series in 1997.

"Edgar is a premier major league player that is a great fit for our club," Leyland said. "I have a great history with him and I'm looking forward to being reunited with him."

Jurrjens started seven games for the Tigers this year, going 3-1 record and 4.70 ERA. Hernandez batted .293 with four homers and 50 RBIs for Single-A West Michigan this season.

As a Tigers fan, I love getting Edgar, but you should be excited about Jurrjens. He looked very good in the starts he had for us this year and will be a very good pitcher. I wish we didn't have to give him up.

As for Hernandez, I don't know a lot about him, but he's one of our top 2 outfield prospects.

So trust me, you will be happy with this trade in the long run.

It's a trade that I believe was expected by many and there have been articles about Rent being on the move to Detroit before the season ended.

I believe it's a move that also opens up more money to pursue an outfielder and for Glavine.

This is a good move by the Braves. Get a young pitcher that might actually be good. As well get a young OF prospects. Also about the rebuilding part. Braves have been rebuilding and competing for the last 3 years. We hit gold in 05. However, bullpen problems in 06 and rotation problems in 07 hurt them. Now with the bullpen strong. The very likelyhood of getting Glavine and then adding Jurrjens to compete for a rotation spot. The rotation looks very strong now.

Escobar has large shoes to fill offensively.

As a Tiger fan I like the trade because Illitch is trying to win the WS now and adding an Edgar Renteria to the lineup certainly helps move Detroit closer to achieving that goal....

but I have to admit that Atlanta got a TON of talent and potential in this trade and it pains me to see my team lose two players and prospects the caliber of Gorkys Hernandez and Jair Jurrjens. I'm a big follower of the minor leagues and trust me, these two kids are good. Your GM definitely did his homework.

And just fyi, his name is pronounced Jigh-eer Jurr-jens.

As a neutral fan I think Atlanta did great. They have a logjam in the middle infield, so trading the oldest and most expensive of the bunch for a promising young pitcher seems like a no-brainer.

The last time Atlanta acquired a promising young pitcher from Detroit, they had to give up Doyle Alexander, but that turned out okay for the Braves, didn't it?

this is a very very good trade for the braves....both hernandez and jurrjens look promising and we cleared some money....hernandez to me looks to be like a faster rocco baldelli....jurrjens put up impressive #s this year in his first season....

good luck to renteria in DET, i loved watching renteria swing the bat here, he is a great player as well as a great person....he'll be missed definitely....

I think that was a bad trade. What were they thinking? Edgar is one if not the best consistent hitter on our team. If it was up to me I wouldn't have made that trade. The good thing is that we have a very solid player to fill his spot in Escobar. He is a clutch hitter and he plays very well defense, he is still in the learing stage, I say by next year he will be top notch.

I am very pleased with the value we got for Edgar.

Obviously outside of Smoltzy and Huddy the rotation was not good last year, but one thing that I really didn't like about it is that there was no pitcher of the future. Atlanta didn't have a Cole Hamels-type pitcher to watch evolve into a star.

Obviously I don't consider Jurrjens to be anywhere near Hamels level right now, but I'm extremely high on him. He posted a 1.14 WHIP and held opponents to a .220 average as a 21 year old rookie - this guy should be very good. I don't know to much about Gorkys Hernandez, but I know he was one of Detroit's top prospects and it gives us more flexibility with the CF situation in a few years.

Edgar was a true professional and a great player while he was in Atlanta, and he'll definitely be missed. However, I think Atlanta got the better end of this deal. I've got a lot more respect for Wren now after his first move.
