The Ringer's Top 100 NBA Players 23-24

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Wed Oct 18, 2023 5:40 pm

Posting this since I know we love to argue/complain about top player lists haha.

And be sure to click on the link/article because it's really cool how they formatted the list with a ton of options you can toggle for more info on the players and to sort by team, etc. And it goes to 100, not just the 25 I copied and pasted.

https://nbarankings.theringer.com

Anyway.. what do we think?

1) Jokic
2) Giannis
3) Curry
4) Doncic
5) Tatum
6) Embiid
7) Durant
8) Butler
9) Booker
10) SGA
11) AD
12) LeBron
13) Kawhi
14) Dame
15) Murray
16) Mitchell
17) Fox
18) Edwards
19) Morant
20) PG13
21) Bam
22) Brown
23) Haliburton
24) Sabonis
25) Siakam
etc etc...

The 3 teams with 6 players in the Top 100 are the Celtics, the Warriors and... one that's quite surprising.

To be fair, the surprising one has 0 in the top 50, though!

the sga thing is a bit controversial since he hasnt really been that great in important games. I havent seen him play through physicality or gameplanning well yet but hes ahead of butler and AD who were amazing in the playoffs a couple months ago. if hes 10, embiid should be higher by the same logic embiid should be 5.

same complaint with siakam not being over hali and sabonis. also, i wonder if victor deserves to be there. i think he can be as impactful as haliburton sabonis and siakam if it works out for him.

The recent ESPN list somehow left Derrick White out of the top 100. He's #56 on the Ringer's list which makes a lot more sense to me lol.

edit - I was thinking as i read "wow this feels more like trade value than ranking". And then as I closed the browser, I saw it's bill's trade value list. not a ranking!

It's actually a player ranking. But if you scroll near the bottom, the trade value ranking comes after it and the url changes.

Thunder have to make the playoffs this year for that SGA ranking to be justified. Expectations gotta eventually match the praise.

3) Luka Doncic
4) Steph Curry
5) Joel Embiid
6) Jayson Tatum
7) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
8) Kevin Durant
9) LeBron James
10) Jimmy Butler
11) Anthony Davis
12) Devin Booker
13) Kawhi Leonard
14) Damian Lillard
15) Anthony Edwards
16) Tyrese Haliburton
17) Paul George

19) Ja Morant
20) Jamal Murray
21) Pascal Siakam
22) Zion Williamson

Biggest differences I see: Haliburton way higher on our list, Fox way higher on The Ringers list. Almost swapped.

Curry and Durant are too high. A healthy Kawhi ranks higher than 13, an unhealthy Kawhi shouldn't even be ranked. You can't just average that out.

Putting Steph that high is just a legacy vote. I like him and hes still damn good, but give me a break... He's not top 3

I usually love theringer, but the list is horrible. I don't see any argument for:
Rudy Gobert at 66 (behind Jerami Grant or Klay Thompson)
Lamelo Ball at 45.
Scottie Barnes 7 spots above Franz Wagner.

Damn, I love Steph but he is not better than Embiid right now. Bron seems low. I think he better than Booker but that's a discussion that can be had for sure

Seeing SGA ranked in the top 10 of every one of these lists now. Should be held to an MVP standard this season.

SGA was a better player than Booker over the season last year. He's the more versatile offensive player but he's also a good defender, which is leaps and bounds above what Booker is defensively. SGA might be the best shot blocking guard in the league.

I get that SGA needs to get back to the postseason and make some noise, but to me the current ranking is justified if you watch the guy play and everyone discounts defense when they do these. There are few players that are as good both ways.
