Robert Horry doesn't get enough credit

Post#1 » by SHAQ32 » Thu Oct 19, 2023 10:41 pm

He was a cheat code during his era. He could shoot 3s as a PF and also bring shot-blocking and overall versatility. We always hear about how bad Hakeem's supporting cast was.

And this wasn't a random thread as some old Houston Rockets highlights came into my YT feed.

I always said Robert Horry needs to be in the Hall of Fame. The guy was so valuable to the Laker dynasty.

People say that Horry was lucky to be on teams that won the championship.
I say those teams were lucky to have him!

Horry and Cassell were both really good players. They were a sophomore and rookie respectively on that 94 team though and that's why they don't get the respect they deserve when we talk about Hakeem's supporting cast. Most people thought of that Rockets team in terms of their long time vets - Kenny Smith, Vernon Maxwell, Otis Thorpe, and Mario Elie - but they had really good young talent. They likely don't win that title without them.

Horry gets more than enough credit for being a great role player. There are people like you pushing him to be a HOFer, which then becomes overboard lol

Hard to think of a role player that gets more credit than Horry.

Only if you were born in 2009. Horry gets celebrated a ton for his clutch heroics.

I almost think he's the most glorified/respected role player of all time. Name someone more respected.

I think Amir johnson was a great role player, elevating raptor teams which sucked because of bargnani, and never really got much credit league wide.

You used to see it all the time in his late playing days/after he was retired, but less so now, sure.

The only thing Horry needs more credit for is how much he looks like Will Smith.

Ron Harper - 5 rings
Derek Fisher - 5 rings
Michael Cooper - 5 rings
Kurt Rambis - 4 rings
AC Green - 3 rings
Steve Kerr - 5 rings
Bill Cartwright - 3 rings
Toni Kukoc - 3 rings
Bruce Bowen - 3 rings
Dennis Rodman - 5 rings
Andre Iguodala - 4 rings
Javale McGee - 3 rings
Shaun Livingston - 3 rings
Kevon Looney - 3 rings

I guess they really don't compare to Horry with 7 rings, but there's a nice list

I'm in the camp that Horry gets a ton of credit. He earned those rings -- I'm especially glad he was on that 05 Spurs team, but role-players play well enough to earn rings every year. Happening to be on the teams that won seven times is more lucky than skill. Each ring was on a ship driven by a GOAT candidate (Hakeem, Shaq and Duncan), and in the case of O'Neal and Tim, they won rings with different role-players contributing just as much in their years. While I think Horry deserves to be known for how many chances he got, I also think people are mixing up volume for impact a bit. Horry's two Spurs rings doesn't put him above Danny Green, Boris Diaw or maybe even Stephen Jackson in terms of the mark they left on the team.

people would value him more if he played the regular season like he did in the playoffs. but he was too smart for that.

Robert Horry on rings over HoF.
"Man, I have seven titles because, at the end of the day, the Hall of Fame doesn’t give you anything for it.” said Big Shot Bob. “There are even people in the Hall of Fame that do not know who they are and I don’t care about the Hall of Fame even if I feel like that I should be in it. But I don’t care about it. At the end of the day, it’s a team sport. I’ve done something that a lot of players would never do, I’ve done things that only a few players have done. “

When I was younger if a guy on the playground or in the gym made one game winner and his name was Bob, Robert, Robbie, Robby, Robert, Bobby he was forever christened Big Shot Bob. In fact, it could have been the 9th or 10th point. It didn't matter how good he was or if he ever made another shot. If he came out he was forever called Big Shot Bob.

As I've gotten older you don't see too many Roberts or Bobs playing pickup ball. I don't think I've known a Big Shot Bob in 10 years and the last one was in his 60s.
