Re: Stotts Steps Down
The defending champs played their entire starting unite tonight. But we are better than the 92 bulls even after a first round loss. This team is a joke on how nonchalant they think winning a title is

Is it weird that I thought about the two posters I've met and then made a decision on who I'd prefer it to be?

If you’re Stotts I can see why you’d feel you deserve respect based on your experience.
But if I’m AG I can also see how it could get really annoying and undermining if you’re hired to a role and the people you’re in charge of managing are not following. He’s literally the head coach and he should be allowed to manage his team, including his staff.
It really just depends on how it played out which We'll never know. Was Stott's really intentionally undermining him? Did he say "one second" and AG disproportionately snapped at him?
We really don't even know if that exchange had anything to with this.

After thinking about it all day, I have determined that the Bucks' season is doomed because an assistant coach quit.

Re: Stotts Steps Down
The real losers in all this are the posters who decided they had all season for their "fire Stotts" posts.
Posters know posting. Some of y.all didn't fire your shots.
I'm not saying I'm keeping score either, but I do know the score.

Whatever the agreement was, you don't yell at employees in front of other staff.
Part of my interest in this season was Stotts unlocking the offense. Certainly not as confident now, but let's see some actual games first.

If you were taking a multiple choice quiz in a management training and it gave this scenario, "yell at him so he knows who's boss" would be like the 'funny' option that you rule out first.

Very proud of this board. We railed off 32 pages in 12 hours.
And we immediately cut through the PR flack stuff, to discuss potentially serious issues within the organization. And had access to a Stotts family friend who has an 18-year posting history on RGM.
Forum 21 for the win.

Re: Stotts Steps Down
The practice court scene described in the athletic seems very plausible. Head coach huddles with players, and tells coaches to hang around so he can talk to them as a group next. Players huddle breaks up and players spread out to do individual shooting work - lots of ambient noise from balls bouncing and players talking loudly. Head coach tries to huddle with staff, but lead assistant is off to the side talking to a couple of players. Head coach yells to assistant that he wants a coaching huddle. Assistant indicates some form of "just a minute", verbally, via gestures or by not joining the huddle. Head coach is not having any of that and exerts his authority in some fashion, either with choice of words, tone of voice, making a demand etc.
Coach feels justified exerting his authority, especially a rookie head coach looking to set a tone of seriousness and intensity to the team. Feeling that he could not allow an assistant to ignore a directive in front of the players and other coaches.
Assistant feels slighted being ordered around in front of the players and fellow coaches. Especially if he wanted the players he was talking with to work on something specific right away and felt the interruption by the head coach was interfering with his coaching responsibilities.
Both the head coach and assistant have a legitimate point - but they don't do anything to resolve the conflict (which is relatively minor in the big picture) specifically. If this type of situation seems to be happening with some frequency, the assistant could be concluding that it is best to move on - and does so in a very professional but emphatic manner. Neither individual is totally to blame for the disconnect. Neither coach feels it is his responsibility to fix a problem that he sees is being caused by the other.
Obviously we don't know the specifics of what caused the rift, but the explanation being hinted at seems to focus more on how the two coaches meshed as individuals rather than over their basketball philosophies.
I appreciate Epi's carefully worded insights that focus on expectations of the assistant coach not being met. Providing cover for Stotts unexpected departure without any accusations or condemnations.
I was very excited when Stotts' hiring was announced. Excited for him and for the Bucks. I am very bummed the Bucks are losing access to his expertise. I hope Griffen proves to be a strong coach and leader who overcomes this major bump in the road and builds a cohesive team and culture. Time will tell.

Re: Stotts Steps Down
I wonder how Horst feels. All reports are he handpicked Stotts to help with Griffs lack of experience and offensive background. I wonder how he's feeling now that his guy is gone

Re: Stotts Steps Down
Flawed process from the start. Hire a first time HC who has a defensive pedigree and pair him with a former HC whom he has no relationship with to fill in the blanks on the offensive end. Makes everyone feel better about hiring an impressive person who admittedly has no prior experience in the big chair. Land said former HC as top assistant under the premise that he'll have some autonomy to run the show on offense. The first time HC says sure I'd love to have Terry's mind implementing the offense and the former HC Stotts says sure I'll do it if the offense is mine to run. But the new HC still expects the assistant to answer to him when he has something he wants to go over with the entire staff. But hey humans agree to situations they deep down aren't comfortable with all the time. The only way this would have lasted longer (but not worked at all) is if Stotts and Griffin were co-HCs. And of course that's absurd. Live and learn, move on.
