Re: Stotts Steps Down
Yelling and screaming are signs of weakness. Even worse, yelling to a person who is 16 years older than you is both a sign of weakness and petiness UNLESS this person is rude/stubborn and does not acknowledge your authority. Stotts seems to me like a real gentleman and well-mannered. Of course, my opinion is not well grounded, i don't know him, it's more like a hunch. If he really tried to undermine Griffin, then i am glad he is gone, because Head Coach is the one who should decide everything in a team. He is the HC, he is taking the blame if things go south, so, he should do whatever he has exactly in his mind.
In conclusion, something feels off with Griffin. But it is also a hunch. I still think he is a defensive mastermind and as it seems, players like him. And that's important. Not that i trust players' gut, most of them are cluelless and would not be good coaches because they can't teach the game, they just can play it. It's important because in this Players' Empowerment Era, they rule everything. So, if you disgruntle them, you will lose.
I am gonna shut up now, not succumbing to some dark, pessimistic thoughts about what happened. We have great players, AG is a great defensive mind, Prunty is definitely underrated, all good. Let's roll

Cant punty(sp) run a O someone pisted on this board yesterday that he ran a pretty good O in the past just curious
Hawks fan here:
Prunty will be good for your offense. The issue will be if AG is willing to listen.
Last season in Atlanta, most people think it was a Nate/Trae issue, but there was also a rumored coaching divide as well. Prunty would make in game suggestions to change momentum and Nate would say 'no, let them figure it out.' The biggest issue among the coaches was Jalen Johnson, Nate just wouldn't play him or if he did he pulled him quickly (fans were also frustrated with his lack of playing time). The assistants wanted JJ playing. As soon as Quin took over, JJ became a regular in the rotation. Now he may have a chance to start at PF this season.
Thanks for the imput i think prunty already had a say in the O and wouldnt surprise me if he runs alot of stotts stuff plus some his own.He csnt be a idiot though and allow giannis to be the PG cant see any coach even the posters on here would make sure dame is the PG

bosses do not have the right to carte blanche interfere with, disrespect, and belittle their employees who are doing the jobs that in previous conversations have also been instructed.
stotts was doing his job. stotts im sure was following general instructions from AG with every word that came out his mouth to the guys and he was doing it at the exact proper time. The problem was sorting the timing of the other demands placed on him.
**** micromanager control freak bosses often run into this problem. They will instruct employees with so many directives that often times they start falling into direct contradiction of other directives. Eventually the employee cant do their job without asking for permission of every action at every time.
the fact he got reamed publically for doing his job and not doing his job at the same time is insane and we all have worked for dicks like that. stotts said the hell with this. the story is right in the news. theres nothing even to debate here
Do you not see how many assumptions you are making so this falls in line with your agenda? Truth is no one has any idea how nuanced the situation is/was, maybe you would think AG was in the right if you experienced everything

I'm still not buying this as a one incident issue. Pro sports is an emotionally charged environment. Conflict is normal. AG's vision for his culture seems be to one of competition, intensity, and discomfort. It's not necessarily wrong, but it is harder to manage. It seems to be working well for Dan Campbell in Detroit. I guess Terry didn't want to be part of it.
If that's the case, and I'm not sold it is, quitting is a b7tch move. It's a 'take my ball and go home' move. You simply don't do that to your team.

Always makes me laugh when random fans assume they know things like dynamics of a coaching hierarchy and how it's supposed to work behind closed doors. Unless you work for the Bucks and attend the practices then this corporate ethics stuff is insane

Re: Stotts Steps Down
Hello. Not a member of this board and in 22 years on RealGM I don't believe that I have posted more than once here, and if so, probably at least 15 years ago.
Anyway, read thru the ENTIRE thread, and surprised at the lack of back story, insight into what went down.
My optics of it.
1) Griffin calling a coaches meeting on the floor after practice seems wrong, even if he does it regularly. Not the proper place. So, I'd say that is mistake #1. Not to anyone in particular. Just a poor leadership decision.
2) Stotts not asking Permission to divert to speaking with Dame & Giannis, preferably prefaced with an estimated time (i.e. 30 seconds would be appropriate, 2 minutes would not) given that AG has already requested a coaches meeting on the floor, which I repeat I think is not the place for this to occur; were MAJOR MISTAKES by Stotts (1. Request Permission; 2. Estimate for how long).
3) There is a huge difference between Lead Assistant and Associate Head Coach, which some posters have already pointed out. Stotts and his agent had a chance to clarify that before coming on board. Once he took a job as a Lead Assistant, he should, from experience, know the difference. Lead Assistant's don't coach the offense, even though they may make A LOT OF SUGGESTIONS, perhaps even more than the Head Coach. However, in the NBA, Associate Head Coaches typically have coached the defense, while Head Coaches coached the offense. Stotts may have realized, too late, that what he really wanted was responsibility for the offense.
4) It's possible that the front office coaxed him to come on board, even enticed him, but ultimately he may have felt that there was no relationship with the guy he was there to assist. When that happens, even if it's because the superior feels threatened because a potential replacement is already in place, sometimes it's best to just move on. At least the announcement was honest enough to reveal that Terry Stotts still intends to continue coaching, but not in an assistant capacity.

Dan Campbell doesn't seem like the type to try and embarrass his own coaches because of his insecurity.

Ron Swanson wrote:I'm not gonna condone shouting matches between coaches, but you guys gotta stop with this whole comparing your corporate office or cubicle job to NBA practices lol. It's incredibly naive.
its very different. you have massive egos. multimillionaires in every position of coaching and playing. and a free agency system where anybody can leave for nothing and make the same money elsewhere.
the fact they dont handle these situations like the corporate offices is why so many lockerrooms around the league go toxic. having leadership that functions in the modern era is very key and especially so for rookie coaches that havent cut their teeth yet
in years gone by the draymond green manual for handling situations in practice was par for the course. so what?
now? damn right you need to function with the same kind of leadership a corporate guy would or you will have a dam break of talent rushing right out your door and weve seen it time and time again in this league.
personally i think its incredibly naive to suggest things shouldnt be handled even MORE cautiously than in our office settings. there is NO CIRCUMSTANCE where the draymond green old way is in our franchise best interest and losing a KEY ASSET literally days before our season starts proves it.

Yeah I think Campbell over the top meathead vibe gives people the impression he's some old school **** but from everything I've heard he's actually a good dude who everyone around him seems to like.

Re: Stotts Steps Down
Put it this way, is there any scenario where AG comes out of this looking good? Absolute best case scenario here for Griffin and the Bucks is that Griff lost his top assistant right before the season? In no way do I see how this can be considered good
Coach Drew: "Milwaukee has always been a team that I have been intrigued by. When we played them, they were a tough team for us to play. Although we did beat them all four times"

I thought he called a HUDDLE not a meeting... It'd be weirder to call a HUDDLE in a separate room with closed doors.
