I could live with with 4/70.

I'm not sure why.
Cole's role and skill set is much less dependent on the guys around him. He's not really "blocking" anybody because there's no one else on the roster who can do what he does in the specialized role he's in.
Fultz impacts Black.
Suggs impacts Jett.
Cole's kind of on his own island.

I think an extension includes a "poison pill" element to it that makes a contract very hard to move this year or next. So I think you may see the Magic just wait it out on all contracts to maintain maximum flexibility for midseason and post season moves.
Of course, then after this decision they will then be paralyzed and do nothing and then see players walk for zilch or be traded for 2nd round picks we never use or we resign them in the offseason for "further evaluation" while bidding against no one for their services but we alter the structure into a slightly declining contract and declare it a negotiating "win" for the future flexibility it affords that we will never use because we are still evaluating

I suspect he'll make more in restricted free agency than he'll get from an extension.Knightro wrote:eyriq wrote:I'll be shockedKnightro wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if Cole signed something today. Anything under 20M AAV is probably a win for the Magic.

I believe that around the league he's viewed as our 5th best player. I suspect that our drafting Suggs and Black in the lottery implies we don't value Cole in that range.
If we extend him it'll be at a bargain and he'll be leaving money on the table.

That depends.
Not saying this is a guarantee to happen or anything like that, but the Magic could mess with his role as the season progresses. They could lower his minutes. He could suffer a significant injury.
If the Magic are offering him like $70M bucks, what's his best case scenario? He kills it this year and is able to command 80? 85? It doesn't seem like there's significantly more money for him out there if he waits since no one is going to pay him to be a starter. There's a natural cap on how much teams are willing to pay a 6th man.
Fultz has far more incentive to wait than Cole IMO.

I would be shocked if a deal got done mostly because I think Anthony thinks he should be a starting point guard and we haven’t given it to him yet. I want to do no extensions let Fultz and Anthony fight it out and if they ball out… great might cost a little more but way better then paying the wrong one
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

Avdija is a 22 year old 6'9 SF that's a good defender. That's alone is a back-end rotation player on a good team. If he ever learns to shoot, like 35% from 3, he's a starter on a good team.
4/55 sounds like a lot, but that's slightly above mid-level exception money this year ($12.4M), AAV is likely less than MLE next season...lets be serious what else are the Wizards going to spend their money on, may as well "gamble" on a 22 year old with upside. Like i said i don't even think it is a gamble.
backing up what you are saying compared to the MLE, I've also gone to looking at % of CAP.
15M a year was a big deal when a teams cap was $90M. (16.67% of total CAP)
When the CAP is 130M, 15M is. (11.5%)
This is very true and by the end of these new rights and possible Amazon sale of product the cap could just keep jumping till 25 mil a year is like the old 10 mil a year lol

How does that damn WCJ contract look now? 13 mil this year 12 next and 11 the last year no options… He was correct to fire his agent if he is a FA now I think he might be in the 30s a year.

This is kinda why i am not worried this front office does have have a track record of signing very good team friendly trade-able deals. What’s the worst one Aminu? and he just got hurt. I am sure most will say Fultz or Isaac but I just don’t think they are bad deal’s especially considering we were bottoming out and had to get to salary floor and the injury protections were in their for Isaac’s deal appropriately.

70mill/4yrs for Cole?? He has only been good for one season, and we're not even sure if its sustainable or if his jump in 3pt% was just a fluke.

It is clear that resigning Fultz and Anthony will cost more than 40M a year for the pair. That's a lot to swallow.

The way it's looking he's gonna get more than that, unless he totally bomb this season.
The risk Cole faces is the Magic control his minutes. If his agent completely balks at the Magic's offers he could end up as the 5th guard.
Personally, if I am running the Magic and know that there is almost no way Cole is going to be here next season, i am either giving him a lot of run early and shopping him, OR more likely (for me) giving Black more development time. As much as I think the Magic are ready to compete now (5-8 seed), honestly Black getting 20 minutes a night this season would in all likelihood be the best thing for this team two seasons from now. Still think we would be in a play in scenario trading Coles minutes for Black's. Of course guys are going to miss games with various injuries, hopefully just nagging small ones, so there will be some minutes.
Black will get minutes because of injuries and rest. We shouldn't give him minutes over more deserving players if we're trying to be competitive. I know it was preseason but he looked absolutely lost out there, and that won't do if we're trying to win as much games as possible to make the playoffs. He can still learn without playing much in his 1st year (like injured rookies like Embiid, Blake Griffin, Chet, etc). If by his 2nd or 3rd year and he's still not getting minutes then we'll have a problem.
Fire Otis!

I mean up until that extension WCJ had averaged 47 games a year. 3 pt% 19%, 20%, 29%. Kind of a blah defender...Many viewed him as an tweener 4/5 who couldn't shoot.
I think his agent was right to lock in life changing money. Here's the headline when WCJ signed deal "Why the Wendell Carter Jr. extension is a fair deal but does carry some risk"
Even the last two years 62, 57 games. I thought he looked great last year, particularly on defense, hopefully the last couple years are not outliers on shooting and games played...
Maybe these salaries are best viewed as Average $ per game...
In my opinion only the absolute best players should bet on themselves when a fair deal is on the table. These guys can plan their free agency's around projected salary caps because there will still be a market for them should they get hurt. KD achilles still gets a max deal. Cole tears his Achilles this year...he might never play another NBA game. Look at JI, who knows if he would have got another good deal since he wasn't able to return off that injury.

So Fultz can get anything under $27M a season now, correct??
I think it was smart to only extend Cole, we know what he is.
