The part I never understood is that this was obvious from the beginning. Randle was already there and Thibs is notorious for having both a tight leash for rookies and no patience for poor defenders. That pick never made sense and there were so many other guys there that would have been better fits (ignoring Haliburton they could have picked Avdija, Vassell or even Cole Anthony).
The pick never made any sense because he never projected as as an NBA starter - he doesn't have a role. He's a great backup though.
The Knicks were actually trying to trade Randle after drafting Obi, but they chose not to settle for a trade return they deemed insufficient (there were talks of Batum) so they kept the ball rolling and next thing you know 6 months later Randle's on the All-NBA second team.
Just an unfortunate series of events for Obi as an individual player but he didn't have the positional versatility to play alongside the team's star and therefore he got buried. But it also speaks to his limitations as a player.
