Sounds counterintuitive, but this is only an issue if they don't want to keep him. If they do, they can just sign him next offseason. The issue is that if they don't want to keep him, it only makes sense to explore trades for him. Not now, but next offseason. And now you'd be exploring his market as an expiring contract vs. locked in for multiple years.

You and me both. Well the upside is that I have an entire year to brainstorm hashtag to pressure Stevens into extending White. Currently I'm stuck on #KeepWhiteInGreen.

I'm not happy that White wasn't signed. And unlike many players of his talent level, he's not a complainer. He didn't complain when the team deferred to Smart on the court. He tells you he's happy to be hear and can wait on the contract. In an age where EVERYBODY gets the bag and the squeaky wheel gets the grease, White has to wait.
The business part of the equation is understandable. If White had a terrible injury, they wouldn't be on the hook on the extension. They could still trade him if things don't work out this season.
But I'm trying to reconcile this 6 year championship window Wyc is talking about. Let's be clear - the Celtics lost 3 good players and got back 2. I'm not disagreeing with the trades, I'm saying they can't afford to lose another good player and they don't have the means to get another.
