The only way Fultz doesn't get resigned is if he gets seriously hurt or this season goes so far off the rails that a bunch of guys end up getting shipped out.

So because starting next year Cole will be receiving Gary Harris' pay fultz isn't getting resigned? Lol that's a funny take
Agreed. It's quite the take. I am totally on board with Coles contract respective to his position. If he continues his current track it might even end up being a steal of a deal if he can accept his role as 6 man off the bench.
But Cole's signing means very little for Fultz. If we had seen a lot more from Anthony Black or move like Suggs playing PG in pre-season then i'd be singing a different tune.
There's still far too many questions to be answered about the guard depth and who will be "the guy"
Coles deal is short term and not really starter money. When Coles 3 year is up AB and Jett will still be in their rookie contracts and it's very possible Fultz will still be the starting point guard. Not a guarantee.
I'm confident that this does mean that Harris is definitely gone at the end of this season or will probably get moved to the Lakers at the trade deadline for 2 2nd round picks that we can sell for cash considerations lol.

I'm not buying into the "Fultz will be resigned because we never let starter go" narrative. I think it's fairly weak in principle.
Our team and expectations when we made the playoffs barely a couple seasons in a row were low. We had no stars, it seemed management & execs were content with being a middling team instead of going for a complete rebuild. Injuries forced their hand and they did a wholesale.
The expectations for the Magic now is completely different and alot brighter/higher. Paolo was a #1 pick and was nearly unanimous ROY & avg 20/7/4. Franz nearly avg 20 ppg and just won Gold at World Championships. Theyre in their 2nd & 3rd season.
I can guarentee you that Paolo & Franz:
1. Know that scoring in the paint became more diffcult for them after Fultz came back
2. That both of their greatest strengths offensively are attacking the rim, and they need a PG who compliments them properly by shooting 3's
3. That they're very competitive, and want to win championships in the NBA
Knowing this, and the fact that the Magic havent chosen to resign Fultz still, I don't see how anyone can say with a 95-99% confidence (statistically significant) that Fultz will be resigning.
I'd reckon there's more of a chance he doesn't resign than he does, and if thats the case Fultz will get moved for a contract to match & 2nd rounder

He should be the 3rd or 4th string PG with one foot out the door.

Ok so we have 7/8 players who can play one of the two backcourt positions, 2 rookie guards, another one on rookie contract.
We had two point guards to extend, both are borderline starters/6th man. We extend one of them and it doesnt mean anything for the other but it means shooting guard who we just resigned is definetly gone ?

I know you like Harris but.. yes. He went from starter to bench and is going to be the most expendable because he's on an expiring deal (which is interesting to say he "resigned") - and if we get shooting from elsewhere (Cole, Wagner, WCJ being better, Ingles, even Jett spot minutes, maybe Suggs becomes just average) - then I see Harris being very expendable. Those aren't too lofty shooting predictions.

They will overpay Fultz and Cole on team friendly short term deals. They did it with Moe and Ingles already. Obviously will be more money and probably an extra year.
I see something like Fultz 2yr + 1 team option years 60-70mil and Cole 2yr + 1 team option 40-50mil
I think they can potentially pull this off for a few reasons.
1. The market doesn't value either of these guys as much as we do. Half the NBA teams have a better or at least comparable PG and 6th man. How many teams realistically would offer these 2 more than that? We may get them even cheaper than I stated above.
2. They both love Orlando and love what we are building. If anything, this team has 10/10 camaraderie. Hopefully it turns to wins but you can tell these guys genuinely like one another. Cole would be swayed I am sure if he was offered the starting gig but again, how many teams would do that? 2-4?
Keeping the flexibility is exactly what this FO is trying to do and I think will continue to do until they either blow it up or push the chips in.
Man I was spot on with Cole huh? Off by 1 million. Great signing.

Still too much if he doesn't take a step forward in his offense, IMO. Kind of an in-limbo spot...too good to underpay or bench, too limited to take us to the next step.
Cole MAY(?) not be our PG of the future, but he's pretty versatile and can be deployed in other ways. A Suggs/Cole or Black/Cole or Cole/Jett or Cole/Harris all can work to varying degrees and situations. That's a fantastic signing for ORL...really not sure how or if it affects Fultz' place...IMO, Fultz may be all ($25 x 4) or nothing depending on his performance early this season.

The only way Fultz doesn't get resigned is if he gets seriously hurt or this season goes so far off the rails that a bunch of guys end up getting shipped out.
Part of it is the trend that no one makes it to free agency anymore. That the contract has value just in being able to be traded for other players and holding the cap space open.
Another difference in Fultz's situation, and Isaac to a lesser degree, is that they are eligible to sign an extension up until next year's offseason. The only reason to do a deal now would be for the Magic to lock in a discount (assuming a breakout) and Fultz to lock in $, rather than risk injury...kind of the same place we found ourselves in 3 years ago, the big difference MF will have already cashed $87M in checks during his career, and likely more willing to bet on himself.
I'd say there's probably a pretty good chance Fultz is moved during the season, or he's extended and traded within the next 12-15 months, potentially a sign and trade in the offseason. We'll see. The Magic are going to have a lot of options available to them next offseason, with financial flexibility. I'd be pretty shocked if our top 8 or so guys were back to begin next season...particularly all our guards. Think they have identified a core of Suggs, Franz, Paolo, probably Black, and will probably look to add skill around those guys. Suspect Howard and Houstan, are probably nice wing depth, and if Isaac proves his health, they will try to retain at an injury risk discount. WCJ, who knows. Sounds like i just talked myself out of a whole lot of change.

If we are winning Fultz will remain the starter this year but I don't think we resign him unless he absolutely balls out. After this year we could look to sign a vet PG who can shot from 3. Maybe someone like Cory Joseph. I personally like what Cole brings as a backup so I don't really want to mess with starting him again. If we plan on Black playing next year then at that point, we have to start Cole. There's alot to think about.

If we bring in a vet to replace Fultz I can 100% guarantee you it won't be one who served as backup to Killian Hayes.

Execlly this. I was listening some pre season podcast from basketball experts from my part of the world ( Eastern Europe) and they all pretty much pointed this. In NBA, free agency is dead. Players use sign&trade or just force their way out.

Lol I was just saying someone like him. A vet PG who can shoot. For the record if Fultz balls out this year Id be more then happy to resign him.Audi wrote:IllMagic04 wrote:If we are winning Fultz will remain the starter this year but I don't think we resign him unless he absolutely balls out. I agree with every point of your reasoning...
However, I just refuse to believe this FO doesn't at the very least sign him and trade him shortly after.
The two main factors are Black's development and the other available options at PG. Now me? I'd run with Cole and throw Black out there to the backup wolves without a second thought about this seasons record. The FO will attempt both options (poorly), they'll resign him and let him play out some time while searching for alternatives for the reasons you've outlined a few years down the road.
This seasons record will be better from internal development alone. They aren't letting Fultz walk for nothing based on that outcome regardless of whether or not it makes sense, from a roster construction perspective, or from anyone with 2 brain cells that can look at the roster on paper and tell it doesn't equate to great dynamic sustainable offense.

I like Harris not becouse he is cool dude and i would go for a beer with him. I like him becouse he is our obly guard who can shoot and defend at very high level. ONLY GUARD ON THE TEAM. Not even one player you listed came near 40%(except Ingles), most of them are not even guards.
We resigned Harris despite having so many guards on our team. Thats a vote of confidence. We resigned Anthony. Thats vote of confidence. Guess who we didnt extend ?
Your faith in our shooting is baseless. Its pure madness to look at our team, look at our past shooting struggles and come to conclusion that our best shooter is expendable. You want to tank our season on purpose ? You think Franz would be ok with it after he scolded Ingles for taking practice shot lightly ? Shaq syndrome or what....
