Magic, maybe. I don't see team's at the stage of the Spurs meeting their cap requirements by signing Quickley type RFAs to the long term deals needed to get the opposing team to not match. For example, I'm pretty sure the Knicks would match 2/$50 and would SA really want to lock him up at 4/$100?
Rockets and Spurs this year showed the playbook: take back contracts for 2nds OR sign FAs to short term, over-valued deals. Ironically, Spurs could have done what you're suggesting here with Reeves but chose to pass. And the Rockets never tried.
You’re assuming that the Knicks reservation was giving Quickley that money and not the trade ramifications of signing him early if we need to include him to make a big trade in-season. Knicks will probably be thrilled to match a 4year 100M deal for IQ if he’s still on the team next summer.

If the Knicks don't want to make him trade ineligible, then that's a totally different thread than what we've been on. But my point still stands; I'm not sure why the Spurs would add a Quickly at $100m and if the Knicks were to match, even less reason for them to offer it.

Hoppy1 wrote:Yes, potentially every team "could" have cap space. Next is to determine who sees Quickley as an upgrade over a team's current PGs.
While Quickley has a ton of potential - as the Knicks have to sell him in such a manner - he really has not been a regular starter or played starter minutes on a consistent basis.
I can name a handful of teams (maybe 5) where I think Quickley could be as good or better than their current starter. It still has to be proven he can lead a team.
Yes. I agree with everything you said.
If you pay him, while keeping him in the same role, he's automatically overpaid for the role, while at the same time providing good production. So, in a certain way, you can't afford to lose him, but if another team thinks (evaluates) he's capable of a bigger role (thus trying to overpay him to pry him away from the Knicks), then he'll probably become overpaid as well.
These kind of players (combo guards who are good scores but don't have playmaking/court vision good enough to be the full time primary ballhandlers of a team) are an "archetype" (as some people call here) that's easily replaceable. Jordan Clarkson, Jordan Poole, Anfernee Simons, Coby White, Cole Anthony are just a few examples.

personally I thought there was something special in him from the first time I saw him play and has only seen more of the same since, I like him as a player alot
in his prime, I can equate his impact with someone like say - Jrue Holiday. not a star on his own right, but does enough on both ends to be pretty impactful on winning, doesn't make many mistakes and is just a great player to have for a team with aspirations

RFAs can only get 4 year deals (with options in their last year). The Spurs would offer him that money because he's good, young, and better than both of their starting guards.

D'Angelo Russell just signed for 17 million. Colin Sexton and Gary Trent signed for 17 million last year. He's miles better than all of those guys at both ends.
Other contracts that were recently signed that should indicate IQ's value: Dillon Brooks 21.5, Bruce Brown 22.5, DeAndre Hunter 22.5, Cam Johnson 23.6. Quickley is better than all of those guys.
Go Knicks!

His low end would be $80-$88 million over four years from someone... His high end is likely better than what Cam Johnson got. If he was asking for $25 I'm surprised the two sides didn't get a deal done for slightly less.

$25m is like 17% of salary cap...
I think it's fine for what he brings in RS, probably they want to see another playoffs from him first.

Re: [Wiretap] Quickley wanted $25 million per year
As a restricted FA, I am not sure if he's going to get that. A team would have to value him as a starter. He's going to have to be lights out all season. However, on the upside, the ball is in his court, no pun intended. Just ball out in a contract year and earn a big payday.

Re: [Wiretap] Quickley wanted $25 million per year
It's tough to pay a non starter that kind of money. I think they'll look to have him be the center piece of a big trade and if that doesn't happen, they'll prob match an offer sheet in the summer. Sucks that 2 of the Knicks' 3 Best players are both point guards

Yes, you are probably right. I agree that Manu is better than most guys from that comment, by clear margin. He could start on many teams. Him and Hart are two starters on thst knicks bench.Scalabrine wrote:UcanUwill wrote:Scalabrine wrote:

I've never heard anyone call Quickley, Manu, but I guess it makes sense.

It makes sense lol. But IQ is even shorter and with him being both fast & smart, there's something fitting about only calling him IQ or Quickley.
