Metrics we want to see...

Post#1 » by Skybox » Mon Oct 16, 2023 11:46 pm

We've got a lot of talent, a lot of promise, a lot of question marks. What REALISTIC metric goals would you give our players? What would you hope to see in terms of increase or decrease in measurable stats?

per game:

Fultz... 2 or more made 3pt shots, 4 free throw attempts (he gets two -attainable-targets)
WCJ...10 or more rebs (he's done it before)
Paolo...1.0 blocks
Franz...5.5 3pt attempts
Suggs...34.5% from 3
Cole...5 assists (he's done it before)
Isaac...18 minutes (he's done it before, have to say 60+ games too)
Harris...down to 18 minutes, same general stats (more aggressive shooting, same efficiency)
Ingles...same as Harris, brief, reliable, efficient, less minutes
Moe... .75 blocks, just enough rim protection to jump ahead of Goga at backup C
Black/Jett...at least 12 minutes?
Okeke/Houstan/Goga...tough to find minutes, who can play mistake-free defense and hit open shots?
Skybox...6 posts per day or less :D

I'll repost this here:

Some individual player things I'll be looking for this season:

Paolo improving his efficiency. I'll likely monitor PER to track this, want a 3 point jump into the 18 range. Would love to see him up above 20.

Franz being more assertive. I'll probably monitor usg%. Would like ~25%.

Suggs increasing his role. I'd like him to stay healthy and join Paolo and Franz in the core. I'll monitor minutes played, looking for him to be 3rd on the team in this.

Black having a successful season. I'll monitor his productivity relative to other rookies, particularly Amen and Ausar. Having more points, rebounds, assists, and stocks on better efficiency is what I'm watching for.

For the team as a whole, definitely better rebounding and then running in transition. Stop with the wasted celebrations that gets them out of the position on the defensive end. Better help defensive from our forward position (mostly Paolo). The guards need to pass the ball to players at the right moment and not pass when there is no time to figure out how to get off your own shot (yes, this is to a specific guard). I want them to take 40 3s a game but they need to speed up because that should not be the bulk of their offense.

I need Franz to be more aggressive-take the same amount of shots as Paolo, call for his shot, and rebound more. I need Paolo to learn how to close out games and get to 50% on his jumpers, 35% on 3s, get around 70% at the rim, 80% on free throws and up his free throw up to 9 per game. I need Suggs to be aware that running into defenders on the offensive end might not be the smartest decision for the first 3 quarters. I need him to continue to ball out during tight games. And for everyone else be 5% better on the offensive end.

Suggs catch and shoot above 37%, he shot like 34% last season IIRC.
Fultz shooting above 33% from 3 with 3 attempts per game.
Paolo 55% TS, 33+% from 3.
Franz 5 RPG.
Top 5 defensive team according to DRTG.
WCJ maintain or improve 3PT% and attempts per game.

If all of these things happen, Orlando will win 50+ games. Heck: I could see 60 wins if all players have all of these improvements.

Fultz + Suggs + Paolo + Franz play more than 78 games and JI more than 65 games.

If healthy, Magic will win a ton of games.

Franz with a 27% usage, Paolo with a ~20 PER, and Black outplaying Amen. Life is good.

100% correct. I have no idea what any player averages in Partizan and I couldn't care less. IMHO, only NBA folk overindex on personal metrics.

I watched almost every game of Doncic before NBA and i never had any clue what his numbers were. It's normal for Europien basketball.
This is probably that soccer/football mentality, where nothing that happends on bad teams matters .

Call it "Personal goals for improvement" then, if you like...or, "Fix what you stink at"

It's nice to say "Just Win - and don't look too hard" ...but that's how you hit a ceiling and don't identify where change is needed. That's also where the guys that are good get tired of carrying the guys that don't help out. Plenty of bad players have rings - but they're not responsible for the winning-they may even have made it less likely.

I can understand setting specific, measurable and actionable goals. I can also understand using those goals to identify better players we should bring in place of current ones.

For me the key to winning games is to win the FG% battle. Orlando is currently 5th in the league at +6.8% (and this is absolute FG% taking in to account Orlando's horrible 3-ball woes).

Franz and Cole are driving this offense, Jalen and JI the defense, early on.

maybe true shooting pct? (not a deep stats guy - is that the one that factors in 3 vs 2?)

Trading 2's for 3's is what kept HOU in the game in the 3rd. This isn't just another Fultz rant...any team with some 3pt threats is always in the game, to an extent. It's like knockout power in boxing...you can be behind in points thru most of the fight, but one mistake (or one 5 minute hot streak)

True, except, Orlando shot 32 FTs. The and-1 play is actually a higher percentage 3-pointer than the long ball.
