Just for the record, the idea wasn't really that we'd get much of anything back from the Tigers. I'm not that high on Shelton -- I'm penciling him in as just a pinch-hitter, after all. It's 99% salary dump. If I can continue my analogy to the Kurt Thomas trade, Shelton would be in the role of the second-round pick the Sonics gave up. Getting back more than a token was never part of the plan. But if they can swing it, great.
I LIKE YOUR IDEA.

You people are nuts if you want to sign A-Rod at over 30 million a year. He is a novelty at this point. I'd take him for 20 million but nothing more. Numbers schmumbers, he disappears in the post-season...
Now Erik Bedard is supposedly available from Baltimore. I didn't even think about him because I was sure the Orioles would lock him up. They do have a decent pitching staff though, and I can see how they'd want to parlay him into some everday value. Man, if I am the Mariners, that would be priority #1. Give them anyone they want not named Ichiro, Jones, or Felix. Bedard as our ace would be awesome...

But why not give up Jones? A 1-2 punch of Bedard and Felix gets this team in the playoffs.

I wouldn't give up Felix. As Sweezo said, a Bedard/Felix or Felix/Bedard rotation would kill.TheUrbanZealot wrote:Now Erik Bedard is supposedly available from Baltimore. Well, Philip Nelson Fan, with just one trade, Detroit and Atlanta sure screwed up both your plans and my plans. Now:
- Jurrjens is no longer a Tiger;
- Atlanta has cleared up its middle infield glut; and
- Detroit has acquired a shortstop, and will most likely move Carlos Guillen to first, obviating their need for a 1B.
Back to the drawing board, I guess.
By the way, this is yet another excellent move by John Schuerholz. (Or is he retiring? Did his successor pull this off?) We've established that they have a logjam in the middle infield, and if they can trade the oldest and most expensive of the bunch for a promising young pitcher, it seems like a no-brainer. The last time the Braves acquired a young pitcher from the Tigers they had to give up Doyle Alexander, but I think that worked out okay for them.

What the hell are you smoking? Novelty? He just had one of the best seasons in the past 50 years.
Also, it's interesting to note that ARod has outperformed Jeter 3-2 in the 5 playoff series each played together in.

Bedard makes a bit of sense provided Clement's not part of the deal. A package of Jones/Wlad/Tony Butler (?) would be fine by me.

You'd give up both Jones and Wlad? I think we'd have to keep one of them. I would consider a Jones/Butler for Bedard or a Wlad/Butler + one more for him. However I wouldn't give up both Jones and Wlad.

I don't think Wlad will amount to much: think Wily Mo Pena with less power.

Why do you keep comparing him to Wily Mo Pena, of all people? As for the "less power" point -- I suppose he might not benefit from the parks in Cincy and Boston the way Pena has, but Balentien is by most accounts an absolute masher. Say what you will about his overall prospects, but there are few players anywhere who have more raw power than he does. Also, this gets less attention than his bat, but Balentien happens to be an excellent fielder. I would say Balentien is more like a Jay Buhner with less plate discipline (and even that improved in '07, which is what makes him a real prospect rather than a mere curiosity).

Because, like Wily Mo Pena, Balentien has absolutely no plate discipline and is easily fooled by anything overpowering or with good break. That he's mashing in the minors is one thing; without any kind of hitter's eye, he's going to suffer the same fate as Pena. He'll hack at everything coming across the plate, which may lead to some highlight HRs, but he's not going to be the type of everyday fielder for a pennant-contending team. Sure, he could blossom, but guys with his hitting ability are usually difficult to project. I'd be all for trading him, especially given the organization's depth at the corner OFs.

In a related story, my hopes and dreams for this offseason have been dealt yet another blow.
