Honestly, those arent terrible shots, at least he used to make it, he is NBA caliber scorer. The consistent problem with him, that he doesnt even care to do anything when he is off ball, but now even his shots arent falling.

I hear what you're saying...Julius certainly isn't a super active cutter...but Randle sets hard screens when he's off the ball, he fights for offensive rebounds, and teams take the threat of him getting hot from 3 seriously enough for him to pull guys like Mobley & Bam away from the rim when they are on him.

We forgive Brunson for not being the best defender mostly because 1. He’s not as capable due to height and 2. He gives more effort on that end whether his shot is falling or not. Nobody minds Brunson having the ball too much because he’s a low turnover player who is efficient with the ball in his hands.

The same can’t be said for Randle on any of this. He’s played out of control every year, his shot just fell a bit more a couple years more than others to fool people into thinking he’s this All-NBA talent. He’s a capable defender, but when his shot isn’t falling or he doesn’t get the ball, he just doesn’t care on that end? This is supposed to be a star on a playoff team and this is how he acts? There’s no defending this.

Lemme preface this by saying I'm not coming for Brunson at all, I love having him on the team and I think bringing him in was absolutely massive for Julius & the rest of the team. I'm only bringing him up because I feel like there is a double standard that exists between the two of them...and my theory is that it's because Brunson's style is very popular, while Randle's bullyball is much more out of vogue.

I acknowledged your point about Brunson not being able to make the same impact defensively as Julius can when he's locked in, but it's not just that. We forgive Brunson for the exact same business decisions on the defensive end that end up getting clipped & shared on twitter when Julius makes them.

I'm not talking about plays where JB is just too small or slow to make the play, but ones where he lets a guy go right past him because he doesn't want to pick up a foul or because he's too tired from the previous offensive possession...the kind of plays that all high volume scorers make in the regular season, because that s*** is a grind. I'm not saying this to crucify Brunson, but to say that it's part of having to carry a huge scoring load through an 82 game season.

I also don't think it's about caring, if anything Julius seems like the kind of guy who cares too much and so puts too much pressure on himself when things aren't going great. But this is getting into armchair psychology that is totally subjective, as we can't really prove what's going on in his head on those plays either way.

Find me the clip of Brunson not hustling back on defense during the last minute of a close game.

Read on Twitter

That clip doesn't do either Julius or Jalen's defense any favors...

He's always been awful, one of the worst players in the league. Sometimes his shot is falling so he doesn't look as bad, but he has no heart, no iq, mentally he's the strict opposite of what you want in a professional athlete.

At least he's making history and leaving his mark in the books:

Jalen rotated over to cover the man in the corner once he saw Mitch rotate to stop Middleton’s drive and prevent the kick out. Randle should’ve been there to help in the paint instead of in no man’s land doing absolutely nothing.

I don't think Randle is an objectively bad player but I've never bought into the idea of him as a primary offensive piece.

His strength is in his versatility. He can pressure the rim a bit with his strength and athleticism, he can be a nifty playmaker when he's not hunting shots, and he shoots the ball well sometimes. But he straight up shouldn't be allowed to scrap in the midrange. He should be either attacking the rim or shooting open looks because he's never been a guy who consistently generates good shots in the middle of the floor.

His only positive efficiency scoring seasons were his last season in LA and only season in New Orleans. Back then he'd get about half his offense around the rim. In New York he gets more like 20% of his offense at the rim and has been enabled to take whatever shots he feels like.

There's always been an interesting blend of skills with Julius Randle, but he's never been a strong decision maker or guy you can consistently play through on offense. He needs to be given a more specific role in an offense other than "cook".

I'm imagining Prime coach Jerry Sloan coaching this guy. I'm afraid Randle wouldn't survive.

Sloan couldn’t even control Deron Williams. A guy like Randle would body him. Let’s not act like Sloan has Popovich intimidation levels here.

It's 6 games in and he's WAY below his career averages in basically every statistical category.
