Robinson is corralling 20.9% of the Knicks' missed shots when he's on the floor. Think about it like this: more than one in five Knicks misses falls into Robinson's hands...

Seven teams have an offensive rebound rate worse than Robinson's. He is outboarding entire five-man units.

Just in case you're unimpressed, if Robinson carried this number through the end of the season, he would break Rodman's single-season record for offensive rebound-rate (20.8%), which Rodman set in 1994-95.

Fred Katz in the Athletic (before last night's game).

I don't think this is as much of a rebounding improvement as it is just a Mitch not picking up silly fouls improvement.

His conditioning and improved defensive IQ have allowed him to stay on the floor for longer stretches. This has allowed him to become just a consistent force on the glass and not worry about picking up another foul in the process. When you only have 2 fouls in the 4th instead of 4-5 you don't have to really worry about how aggressive you get in pursuit of a rebound.

That's definitely a big part of it, plus he's getting better and better at taking the space he wants. That started last year, but it's only gotten better. He literally runs out of bounds on the baseline and just backs his way to good position for the rebounds. He's so much stronger than 99% of the players that it's hard to stop like the Eagles on fourth and inches.

Are guards wings? How far back do we go?

Different era, but Clyde wasn't too bad... :D

yeah Clyde is our best two way player in history. But I consider him a guard.

Ewing and Reed were also elite two way players but they are bigs.

Knicks just haven't had a lot of good wings in general in there history.

No reason both of those guys can't play off each other. IQ plays better next to a primary ball handler anyway

I saw that. They just want star power to talk nonstop about. No where did I hear anything about fit with remaining pieces.

We have 2 tier 2 guys (Brunson, Randle), 2 tier 3 guys (RJ, IQ) , very good two way role players (DDV Hart Grimes) and easily a top 5 C combo in the league.

Consistency with fundamentals will take us farther than just adding a star to the mix

his matchup assignment for the majority of the game was Keldon Johnson. Who is a quality offensive player...in 22.5 possessions he held him to 0 pts.

He is now holding his matchup the -7.9% FG% vs his opponents avg.

He is 1st on the Knicks with a 98.7 DEF rating

He is #7 in the entire NBA in DEF rating for players that avg over 20 mins per game (minimum of 5 games at least played).

3rd in the NBA in defensive win shares

This is 3rd banana on a championship team type sh*t

As we've discussed all summer 1v1 stats aren't reflective of defense as a whole, as it comprises a small sample of possessions, but RJ's overall defense looks much improved compared to the past two seasons. This is one area where he could always improve and make himself a much more well-rounded player. Hopefully he keeps it up because him becoming a plus (or even just neutral) would elevate our defense to a whole other level.

I'm aware that individual man defense doesn't always equate to good defender. But the only individual defensive stat I provided was his good defensive FG% against.

DEF rating/DEF WS are player+team stats. So that would suggest the knicks are player better defense as a team with him on the court than off.

Again I still think less than 10 games is too small a sample size....probably need +15 to 20 games to really get a good sense but I would much rather him by at the top end of these defensive analytics than at the bottom.

No absolutely, that was just a general disclaimer but to your point he has looked much better overall on defense and if it sustains it would a major development for his career and the team as a whole.

yes agreed, his POA defense is much better...he navigating screens better. The effort level is there. He was horrible last year...he should at least be avg...no excuse not to be. He will never be a big deflections/steals/blocks guy. But you can always improve your team defense and being in the right spot. That clearly shows from the eye test and is backed up by his early defensive metrics.

Knicks fan tv is pretty unwatchable when CP takes the night off. It’s also kinda crazy that Robert Cross spends like 30 bucks a night to post comments on KFS post game show. That’s like 2500 bucks in an 82 game season. You probably could get season tickets in bad seats at garden for that price.
