Thx for posting. Great vid!

I was disappointed when we drafted him. And Sassar I didn’t know anything about. Turned out to be a pretty good draft.

I know you're not an advanced stats guy, but still, it should be fun to see what the data say.
I don't have a problem with advanced stats. I think they are a useful tool. I have a problem with the way people often use them.

Stats don't lie, but people lie with stats all the time.

Anyway, let us know what you find. His rebound rate could lead to some interesting comparisons.

When you look at players in the history of the game to average at least what Ausar is averaging in PTS, REB, AST, BLK + STL for an entire season its a very short list.

Kareem 3 times
Sam Lacey in 73/74
Bob Lanier in 73/74 for Det
David Robinson in 92/93 & 93/94
Vlade Divac in 94/95
Chris Webber in 96/97 & 98/99
Kevin Garnett in 03/04
Anthony Davis in 18/19
Ausar Thompson 23/24

And he's not just doing it empty stats on a bad team he's doing it while playing great defense and winning basketball in his first 12 games in the league as a 20 year old. He's also super humble and soft spoken he's a bit of Barry Sanders personality wise.

There's a poster on the GB who thinks Ausar's gaudy rebounding numbers are "wholly" an effect of his teammates deferring to him. Gave me a good chuckle.

Don't get me wrong, I'm high on Ausar, but I'd like to see a full season before I do comps with HOFers.
Look at Amen Thompson, who's undeniably a similar player :), who hasn't cracked Houston's rotation.

Yes, this draft and the Duren trade were amazing moves by Weaver.

Ausar Thompson is leading the league in loose balls recovered at 1.7 per game.

I don't watch anything until Summer League, so I was hesitant because I never even heard of Overtime Elite, and when I found out he was playing against 16-yr olds, he definitely had to win me over. And he has. A core and starting-lineup of

Cade
Sasser
Ausar
Stew
Duren

Ivey off the bench. Maybe Monte sticks around, being a local guy. He's an underrated player, and I can't wait til he's playing/acclimated. Bojan isn't long-term, but he'll only help. He is great off the ball and a very smart player. He just has no athleticism, but don't want to trade him for picks. I'm done with picks. We need to get some good players we need who are in their mid-20s. Houston totally changed their team around getting a new back-court. I rather overpay for players who can play on both ends, then stock-pile draft picks. We have enough young players, and fans are sick of losing.

Yes, Weaver hit a home run with him and Sasser. The thing about Ausar Thompson, is his potential to improve is so high, he is performing this well in a huge increase in competition, overtime elite was mostly lower level high school players, so his level of competition was below D1/International/G-League, so I expect him to get better just adjusting.

Soon we'll know a good comp for Ausar. He is close to 400 minutes played in the NBA. Once he reaches 500 minutes played we can run the simulation and see the data, I know you're not an advanced stats guy, but still, it should be fun to see what the data say.

FWIW, Luka's comp was prime Tmac.

I think he's gonna be Rodman level good on D.

What does that even mean? Is he claiming they're not getting rebounds so he can?

its not possible. you would need 90s nba ruleset for that to even be remotely possible.

If you want good comp for Ausar, he looks to me like he could be in the mold of Matrix, Shawn Marion.

I think so. Which makes no sense with the knowledge that Duren, Stew and Cade are all above average rebounders for their position and it's very clear from watching the games that no "deferring" is taking place.

NBA Rookie Rankings: Ausar Thompson outshining Victor Wembanyama, Chet Holmgren

The spotlight not just on the rookie class, but the NBA season as a whole to this point has been on San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama. A generational talent whose length is something we have truly never seen in a versatile big man before, Wembanyama has been everything the Spurs could have hoped for. As the season goes on and he continues to get acclimated to the pace of the NBA, Wemby could very easily solidify his spot as the best rookie in the league.

This can also be said for Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren, another lengthy big man whose game is not just limited to the paint. Holmgren is a modern-day center who blocks shots at one end and then immediately hits a triple at the other. The talk all season long has been centered around Wembanyama vs. Holmgren for Rookie of the Year, but Detroit Pistons rookie Ausar Thompson has truly been the most impressive rookie to this point.

Thompson looks like an All-Defensive candidate early on in the season and is among the best rebounders in the league as a 6'7″ small forward. As he gains more confidence in his shooting abilities, Thompson may become one of the best two-way players in the entire NBA.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Just finished this POD. I cant say i disagree with them saying the pistons should just build around Cade and Ausar. They did compare Ivey to Dennis Smith Jr which makes me nervous.

Return to Detroit Pistons
