Re: Wembanyama. I'm concerned
He just played my Kings. Give him a real passing PG and he skyrockets to MVP caliber by the end of the season.
Defensively he already the best in the league. It’s just a bunch of guys making business decisions and dribbling away from him, only Fox and Sabonis really tried to go at him. He’s a walking deterrent. Massive defensive inverse-gravity, like opposite magnets.
Offensively, it’s all about his shot diet. A real PG would help replace his frustration at not getting the ball shots with real shots. A PG would also improve the general quality of his shots and he’d get 6-8 points more per night on lobs and breaks. With a real PG he’s easily at 25+ ppg right now.
And he only will get better.
For all ya’ll talking him down…I have no idea what you are watching. It’s like the rookie mistakes are all you see, because the rest of it is already unbelievable.
PS - his condition is still not great but it’s better than even a few weeks ago.

On the night of the draft draw, I was very happy to see him with the Spurs, but I must admit I was a little hopeful that the Pacers would get the 1st pick.
The Wemby + Haliburton duo would have just been a crazy thing.

The only thing I'd be concerned is if he called is number too many times after he got a PG or if he stays a shooter as he gains strength
The Greatest of All Time debate in basketball is essentially who has the greatest basketball resume of the player who has the best highlights instead of who is the best player

Re: Wembanyama. I'm concerned
There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of Wembys game and development schedule if you thought he was gonna come in like Shaq. The things holding him back are:
1) This is his kids body. He has almost no base and can barely make a lot of moves on balance without defense right now. This all gonna change in the next two years. He will get much stronger and that balance will be the difference.
2) The skills are all there. He just needs reps and coaching. If you’re concerned then pls stand on it bc it sounds ridiculous. Just going back, board was SURE Linsanity was real. But concerned about Wemby. Hmm

As others have said it’s not like a PG or a great smaller guy helps a great bigger guy…. Oh wait that’s the blueprint for the most championships in NBA history.
It’s how basketball is played at the fundamental level.
Kareem/Magic
Shaq/Kobe
Duncan/Parker/Ginobili
Garnett/Pierce/Allen
Giannis/Jrue/Holiday
Keem/Drexler
West/Wilt
Oscar/Kareem
Curry/Green
Kawhi/Lowry/Gasol
Bron/Irving
Davis/Bron
Russell/Cousy
Malone/Erving/Cheeks
Thomas/Rodman etc etc etc.
Jordan/Pippen/Rodman
I mean it looks pretty damn obvious here. High/Low + Wing and you’re in business.

Even on a smaller scale, look how much better the Kings got when they paired Fox with Sabonis. It made and makes so much sense - it just flat out WORKS

But this is a reactionary thread. All players have cold streaks during the season, rookies tend to have more. He'll be fine.
People would say the same about Cade Cunningham's college and rookie season turnovers. Now he's not bad, he has the worst spacing around him. But he's inefficient and turnover prone. I can easily see the excuse for Wemby's inefficient and turnover prone play going forward into future seasons, personally, but wouldn't be shocked if it went the other way.

I'm not even going to read 10 pages.
We as ball fans need to stop placing unreasonable expectations on new players. Let the guy develop for a few years, grow from a boy to a man. Guy has fantastic potential... let's not start screwing with his head and just enjoy watching the process.

Re: Wembanyama. I'm concerned
Some great players come into the league and they're almost finished products from day one. Others take a few years. Giannis, for instance, took about four years to get to something close to what he is now.
Everything will look a lot better when he adds that 25-30 pounds over the next three to five seasons. Increased strength, power, and weight while maintaining flexibility, fluidity, and a lean and athletic body fat percentage.
When that happens, he'll be a physically capable 255-260 pounds. He'll then be able to get easier shots more consistently and shoot them at a higher efficiency. Lobs, rolls, cuts, dump-offs, post mismatches, offensive put-backs, transition baskets. These sorts of plays. The shooting will improve with repetition as well as through improvements in strength and conditioning.
He's doing like 50-51% on 10-11 2PT attempts. I'd like to see a 22-23 year old Wemby doing something like 55-57% on 15+ 2PT attempts. I think that's reasonable.

Duncan wasn't crazy and he was great.
I think that's more of an apt comparison. And yes, just not great-est.
It's arguably not so apt, as you need to be pretty special mentally to have a Tim Duncan or let's say Kevin Garnett basketball mentality too. Though certainly you can argue Garnett is in with the crazy hypercompetitive guys, for sure.

Spurs are actively hurting Wemby’s development at this point. Like if they had played Malik Rose at point guard when they drafted Duncan. I wish he went somewhere else I cannot stand seeing a generational talent wasted by incompetence. Pop has lost it.

Miami_Lux wrote:This is not supposed to be a reactionary thread. I understand that we are not even one quarter into the season but nonetheless there are quite a few concerning observations about Wemby's actual ceiling.
Let's look at his numbers over the last six games following his 38-point game against the Suns. 38/100 (38%) from the field, 9/35 (26%) from three. I understand that San Antonio has a bad team, a PG that is not a PG (i.e. Sochan), and overall his teammates don't give him the ball in good spots as much as they should.
However, I was told Wemby was a great shooter for his length but he demonstrately is not. While his three-point shot may look good, his percentages are just abysmal. I don t think he will ever become a great shooter if he can t shoot even 30% from the three-point line.
Second, from watching the game, I think his handles are very suspect. He gets stripped a lot and his movement with the ball is very clunky at times making it easy for good defenders to strip the ball away from.
I don t think Wemby will be a bust. He can become an elite defender but offensively right now he just looks like a taller Porzingis.
Please don t hate me.
Well, for starters, Porzingis is not an insult. KP is doing fine. The problem here is that Webmy is not KP yet.

You’re seriously going to try and criticise Wemby for shooting 77% from the line?

Straw man fallacy. I am critiquing when those compare his percentages to Durant, while conveniently leaving out his free throw percentage. 77% is OK but nothing to write home about for a guy being compared to KD on offense.

Medias have put this kid on Lebron's, Shaq's, KD's rookies seasons level even before he put an NBA jersey on.
He has all the talent to be an all time great, but right now, he is a rookie who is struggling with his shot selection in a bad team with a lot of young guys.
The whole team has to play better, and they will. People are just too impatient, as usual.

Re: Wembanyama. I'm concerned
He is chucking way too many 3s. He can't shoot... I'm fine him shooting 1-1.5 times per game from 3 point line but otherwise he should be inside scorer. He is way worse shooter than Westbrook ever was who has always been killed by everyone while a lot of his shooting is to keep defenders honest, and Westbrook never shot 3 pointers at this crazy rate, not ever close. Also there is no reason for Wemby to shoot to keep defenders honest from outside because his inside scoring is potentially so much more lethal because of his size and he is not the ballhandler/outside player like your PG is supposed to be.
