As a Knicks fan, I love Breen and Clyde, but I also really like RJ and JJ, and I like Ryan Ruocco on play-by-play, although there are others I like better, such as Ian Eagle, who has often worked with RJ on Nets games.

RJ is a gleeful troll, so I can understand why he's polarizing, but he's not JUST a troll. He brings substantive commentary too, and I generally find his humor more entertaining than annoying.

RJ is a good analyst, but a little too straight by himself. Having RJ with him gives both RJ and JJ things to react to and creates a good dynamic. I think they work better together than either would by himself, a rare case of a three-person crew being better than a two-person crew.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

I recall he did fight it once: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1740h2r/jj_redick_our_producer_is_in_my_ear_trying_to_get/ (clip deleted but I'm sure it's out there somewhere)

But I think also Adam Silver's comments about wanting more meaningful commentary that explain the game (and less "they played harder" simplistic takes) might be a sign that ESPN could catch up soon if it affects their business deal with the NBA.

maybe....the general public, which is silver's target, just wants entertainment. that's why tnt is so popular,,,and wins awards!!!

meaningful commentary gets the boot if the ratings drop. put his money where his mouth is and put zack lowe on and see where that goes, if silver wants better commentary so much

RJ is great, don't get the hate.

He knows basketball, is witty and tells a good story

RJ is a clown honestly. Might cater to the under 25 crowd. JJ has no personality.

I'd rather not deal...

I don’t watch much ESPN, so I may be biased by one instance I saw where Reddick debating some hot take ESPN guy. JJ was getting madder and madder, trying to give a honest analysis, and the other guy (I’m imagining it was the insufferable Stephen A Smith) was arguing a point that I doubt even he believed in. It made me feel like JJ was too good for ESPN.

all i want is a bit of INSIGHT, which let me explain is a WHOLE LOT DIFFERENT than "good commentary", expressed in an entertaining way.

like i don't want doris burke or zack lowe telling me why a play worked. i want someone telling me that in order to make alert plays, most players marinate their socks in soysauce. i don't want a civil war history lesson,,,i want ken burns telling me about the civil war that we never hear

LOL someone said Gus Johnson.

That guy has been playing a caricature of himself since he went ballistic out of nowhere during that college football game in like 2008.

there's other teams that have good commentators I think it's Houston but there's some absolutely dreadful ones.. I think it might be Toronto hard to remember which but nothing Homer about my comment it's complete facts that most even non Knicks fans would agree. Gus Johnson is iconic, Breen been around since forever and Clyde is one of the most non bias calls the game how he sees it

JJ Reddick is great too

Redick is already one of the best color guys out there. Luckily he at least does some games alone, because I can't stand Jefferson. Yes he's competent, but that's sadly a low bar these days. I find his personality grating and the banter with Redick just isn't entertaining to me. I get everyone has their style preferences though.

It's also too bad because Ruocco is one of the better PBP guys and he's usually paired with them as a trio. My only gripe with him is he has Spero Dedes syndrome where he makes every play sound like it's the final minutes of a close game. I'd also like to see Vince Carter do more national games. He's solid.

Not very hard to beat Doc and Doris. Literally, Doc mentioned Huerter has struggled all season shooting just 2 days after he commentated the Kings and Lakers game where Huerter went for 28 points on 6/11 from 3.
The amount of things they got wrong in the broadcast is unbelievable.

I love listening to Breen and Frazier. They have great chemistry and have a brilliant balance of calling the game and storylines.
And your point about Clyde being one of the most non bias calls is absolutely spot on. Very underrated point.

JJ is great too, just don't let him speak about anyone older than him.
