If Suggs makes the All NBA defensive team does he qualify for the rookie max?
So, if Jalen makes the all defensive team, will he qualify for max and will we give it to him?

No.
But if he becomes the Defensive Player of the Year, then he'd be eligible for the max.

If he elevates to that level (financially) without some serious offensive growth, we are in trouble. Listening to Woj pod today (I forget who the guest was) but definite speculation that teams may become far less likely to throw around max or near max contracts to non-superstar players.
Lavine is a great example...really good player with superstar money...they'll be lucky to get a single first back for him if they don't take back bad money. Bad contracts (his peaks at $50m per) will have far greater negative impact on team-building than in the past.

That should always be the case. Max contracts should be for 10-max 15 players in whole league, instad you have like 60 players around max contracts

I'd rather let him walk than pay him near max when it's time, unless he drastically improves his offense and shooting. That'd be a contract that would prevent us from contending. Gonna be interesting to see how we handle some of the guys when it's time for them to get paid

The rate that he's playing I don't see him getting more than 25 million a year. Fantastic defender But his offense leaves a lot to be desired with his injury history. I'm pretty sure he'll be back though.

The NBA is negotiating a new media deal. If that deal kicks in, would it bloom the salary cap and player salary?

Right now, on defensive EPM (est. +/-), Suggs is in the 99th percentile. He's third overall, behind Barnes and Chet!
Small sample size alert, but Suggs defensively is balling.

i agree. With some small improvement maybe he could get a Jaden Mcdaniels type of contract. I think Suggs will be extended before he hits FA.

Defensive minded guard who doesn't contribute much to offense is easly the cheapest arhytype out there.
Tony Allen was almost always payed below MLE ( or what would have been MLE in past).
Smart is DPOY and makes sub $20M a year, that is contract that he signed in middle of his prime.
Alex Caruso is even cheaper, sub $10M a year.
Teams tend to dump bank on elite wing defenders and Cs mostly beacause somebody elite 6'8 defender can cover 5 positions(at least 4) , where elite 6'2-6'5 player simply has no business guarding higher quality taller players than himself.
Tbh i highly doubt that Suggs would even take any offer, knowing he has whole next year to play himself ( with better offense) into better contract.
And from Magic perspective, designed max is type of contract most best young players get BUT team can only hold 2 players with such exstension. It's apsolute no brainer that they need to save both slots for Franz & Paolo.

This board can be funny
Every draft, this place goes insane over the over-hyped defensive star with 0 offensive ability who is going to become a superstar (Usman Garuba ring a bell??), but now that we actually have an all-nba level defensive guard with some offensive\playmaking ability, everyone is saying they arent worth the money
So which is it? Are elite defenders worth the money\draft picks, or have you all been talking out of your ass for the past decade?

He creates offense out of defense.
He wont be anywhere close to a max deal unless he jumps a huge level and does all the things to meet everyones expectations.
Likeliest scenario is that he ends up getting paid around the same salary as a starting level SG.

I think Suggs will get around 20 mil in FA next summer, maybe 22-23 mil with incentives around health & offensive production
His play style makes it hard to play him 35+ mins because the amount of energy used on defense

Suggs TS currently is almost league's average (.563 vs .576) so he has potential to be a Marcus Smart with better offense, which can be a financial problem, yes.

If news broke that we signed Suggs to a 4 year, $100M extension, how would people here feel??
That is quite a bit more than we gave Cole and others but less than a max.
Is it fair? Overpay? Not enough?

I don’t know, but after watching the last 3-4 games it would be extremely difficult to say “nah, see ya” to what this guy brings nightly and how much he means to what Orlando is trying to accomplish.
