Inaugural In Season Tournament 2023-24

Post#1 » by basketballRob » Fri Nov 24, 2023 11:20 pm

Orlando is 3-1 +22.

We need the Bulls to lose by less than 23 on Tuesday against the Celtics.

I think Toronto has to lose by less than 14 against the Nets, also.

I'm not sure how we can qualify for the wildcard?

The first tie breaker is head to head. If it's a two way tie, head to head decides it. Three way tie with circular head to head results and it falls back to differential. The last tie breaker is the prior season record.

Edit: wildcard will come down to differential

And-1

The practical reality to the first point is that Orlando wins all first tie breakers if the Nets lose.

Then the Magic win the group if the Celts don't win by 23 over the Bulls.

AND EVEN THEN: the Magic is the wild card under a lot of scenarios. Both the "pointless" Okeke 6 points at the end of the Raptors game and the "pointless" F-Wagner 2 at the end of this Celts game helped the Magic run up the differential scores. Those 8 points nearly guarantee the Magic will be in the in-season tourney.

What is the scenario here for us to make the elimination round?

What if BKN wins and BOS wins next Tuesday?

How can we advance if we compete for a wildcard?

Now to be a debbie downer: by the Magic being in the in-season tourney, there are 2 harder regular season games coming. If the Magic miss it at this point, then 2 "lower" teams would fill in.

Would you say we are favorites to make the elite 8? I think the odds are in our favor.

By no other 3-1 team being +23. It's that simple.

Bigly.

It's not close. The Magic is nearly certain at +22.

Not exactly. If theres only two teams who are 3-1, it will be decided on head to head result. So if Boston lose but the Nets win, the Nets advance irrespective of points diff given they beat us.

We either want both to win or both to lose.

That $500k per player is no joke...remember, most of ORL guys are on rookie deals. That's some real money.

Looking at maybe playing the Bucks or Miami in the KO stage.

To clarify, you are correct but I note that this is two differing games.

It is a Nets v Raptors and a Celts v Bulls. That is both the Nets need to win a home game and the Celts need to lose a home game for what you state to become true.

And even then, Orlando will probably be the wild-card.

The Pacers play the Pistons to win group A. Indiana must win by 7+, or Orlando will be a higher seed if the Magic win their group.
Milwaukee and Miami is a mess to work out all permutations relative to Orlando.

The Nets needs to win by 15 over Toronto, if the Celts win at home to the Bulls.

Orlando needs to quietly be a Boston fan for a game.

Thinking about the wildcard, six teams have 1 loss or less. One of those will win their group.

Bucks 2-0; vs was, @mia
Knicks 2-1; vs cha
Heat 2-1; vs mil
Nets 2-1; vs tor
Cavs 2-1; vs atl
Celtics 2-1; vs chi

The path where we rely on the wildcard has the Nets defeating the Raptors and the Celtics losing to the Bulls, or the Nets or Bulls just blowing the heck out of the Bulls or Raptors. The wildcard race will be tough.

Thats true. Basically we just want the celts to win but not by much. Easiest scenario.

One interesting test for the IST will be how elite the "elite eight" really are.

Right now it would be
Lakers, Kings, Rockets, Suns
Pacers, Bucks, Magic, Knicks

Passes the sniff test though missing some obvious contenders like the Nuggets and Celtics.

Return to Orlando Magic
