Jaylen Brown compares more to Rudy Gay or Richard Jefferson. In fact the statistical resemblance to Gay is striking. Some echelon higher like Joe Johnson was clearly better than Brown has ever been or will be.
People don't want to hear that, but Brown's "star"-selections are a product of the success of the Celtics. If Brown would have played for the Sacramento Kings f.e. he wouldn't have had this reputation. It always happens that media and fans want to attribute success to individual players. Of course the Celtics have Tatum, but that solely narrative of one player gets boring (unless you have a superstar like Jordan or James).
And the media knows that you can't sell "good coaching", "roster depth", "weak competition" or any general notion as an explanation. So they create a hype. The "Jays", two young self-drafted wings as pillar for the future sounded good.
In recent times the same thing happened to the Warriors. At one point they did deserve four All Stars with Curry, Thompson, Durant and Green. But when the success of the Warriors continued it was an automatic All Star selection for Thompson and Green, while their play had dropped off a bit and more deserving players were overlooked in the deep West.
Coming back to the current Celtics team if you watch objectively then it's clear that Tatum is our number one and Porzingis our number two. After that it's between White, Holiday and Brown. And based on the performances this season so far you choose White as number three. And then it's a toss between Holiday and Brown.
As a side note. In an alternative history in the summer of 2018 after the unexpected playoff-run with Rozier as PG, the Celtics become aware that Irving isn't going to extend his contract. So they make a huge trade combined with Brown for Leonard, who just like in real life leaves for LA after a year. The Celtics initial starters in 2019 would then be Rozier, Smart, Hayward, Tatum, Theis/R.Williams. And the same Terry Rozier of the Charlotte Hornets may have become an All Star.
