Trae balled out in his first playoff run but last playoffs and I expect the rest of the series against us his size and horrific defense just gonna be too much of a problem. Fox is a decent defender. Plays in the scheme really well and has much better size, athleticism and speed. His slashing is also harder to take away in playoffs. Trae is alot better playmaker tho.

Its like a poor mans Wade VS Nash comp IMO

Kinda think that Trae is a bit overrated. He is pretty inefficient, chucks, with bad defense.

This poll would have been the opposite at the start of this season. Kings fans knew though.

Yeah, you all knew how pathetic Fox was last year that it was just a mirage

If you watched you could see he is very close to the same player. He just has a better system and coach.

Well, he's a bit bigger, which helps. He isn't a competent 3pt shooter. This is his first year not-sucking at being an efficient scorer (first year with positive TSAdd, etc, etc) and he's a +1.8% rTS guy, which is okay but nothing to write home about as a volume scorer. Isn't really the same level of playmaker.

He certainly had a nice opener against the Warriors, then went back to being dogcrap as a scorer in Game 2.

Very in-the-moment kind of thread, I think. Trae, for all his playoff issues, is still the notably superior player. At least for now.

Yeah I think people are being prisoners of the moment. I’m taking Trae, and if I were an opposing team, I would try to buy low on him now. He’s an incredibly talented offensive player, and if you run a spread PnR with him, it’s almost impossible to stop. I also think he made some improvement this year defensively. Still not good, but enough to give you hope you can manage on that end with him out there. And I don’t think Fox himself is exactly a good defender either.

Fox is a better defender, slasher, and takes care of the ball much better than Trae who is a turnover machine.

You still give the edge to Trae as he's still the more complete and potent offensive player even with all his shortcoming on the defense and ball security. It's closer than most people think imo though.

My thing with Trae is that I could see him having a top 3 voting MVP season with the right team. He's so good offensively when his head is on straight. But you're probably never winning a title if he's a major part of your team - too problematic defensively.

Fox is a two way player even though he's probably not as valuable in certain circumstances. This one depends some on what you need and where you're at with your franchise.

Just wanted to revisit this thread. People were saying this was made in the moment, still would take Fox over Trae.

I’d still take Trae. Fox has a career high 3.6 BPM this season through 9 games (previous high 2.5). Trae beats that in 3 of his 6 seasons. Fox has a career high on/off of 5.7 (not this year). Trae beats that in 2 seasons. Yeah, Trae got off to a poor start this year and Fox has been better so far in 22/23, but he doesn’t have the passing ability Trae does and I don’t think he’s as complete of a player.

Does he though? His last four full seasons he ranked in the 9th, 10th, 14th, and 19th percentile in defensive on/off by Cleaning the Glass. That’s worse than Trae all 4 years.

He does. Starting towards the end of last year. He has always had the tools, Mike Brown has him using them.

You could say the same thing about Trae that he started playing defense last year. 51st percentile last season and 40th percentile this season.

Regardless of which ones better, I think we can agree that both Young and Fox have improved from being terrible defenders to merely below average. I don’t see much difference between them on that end. Likewise, both are very good scorers with similar volume and efficiency.

The big difference between them is passing/playmaking. Trae’s averaged double digit assists both of the last 2 seasons while Fox is just barely over 6. Trae lifts the whole offense to a much greater degree than Fox.

This is not to say that Fox isn’t a good playmaker in his own right or that there’s a huge difference between them as players. They’re both probably in the 21-30 range somewhere. But ultimately I think Trae is a little more complete.
