4th greatest point guard

Post#1 » by Rishkar » Sat Nov 25, 2023 7:35 pm

So, I assume most people have some combination of Oscar, Curry, and Magic as their top 3 (and West if he's considered as such). Who does the GB have as 4th, and why?

I didn't include guys like Cousy, Isaiah, Gary Payton, Westbrook, Billups, or Rondo because I fail to see any argument that would put them fourth (except for something really basic like Cousy having 6 rings) despite them being fantastic players. Why do you think he should be included?

Isiah Thomas would be my #4th

He was the best player on 2 title teams, a ridiculous passer and great scorer, played amazing in the playoffs

Why would Nash or Kidd or Stockton be ahead of him?

Isiah Thomas is 4th. Though of those in the poll, I voted Stockton. Model of consistency, 2 way player, 2 Finals trips, and 2 potentially unbeatable records (assists/steals totals) from categories that you’d want your point guard to be good at.

Well, Nash has an argument as the greatest offensive player ever. Stockton has elite longevity, and a comparable prime, because he's a better passer, worse scorer, and better defender. I've always seen Isiah as very comparable to Chauncey, as the leader of a Piston ensemble cast who played well but not fantastic. Would he make your top 40 all-time? I'm not trying to be confrontational or start an argument; I'm a younger fan who never saw him play and I'm curious what would elevate him ahead of these other guys.

This comes up almost everytime a thread like this is started on the GB but i don't consider Steph a PG.

Dray has initiated and facilitated the offense that entire dynasty.

Klay has taken on the toughest perimeter player and been the POA defender that entire dynasty.

So, with those 2 things in mind, Steph isn't a PG, to me. He's the greatest shooter of all time and a hell of a SG but for sure doesn't fit on my list of PGs.

Outside of being the shortest and skinniest guy on his team, not sure why people consider him a PG.

Stockton.

Smart, tough as hell, crazy productive, great team mate and an Ironman.

Same...IT went toe to toe with MJ, bird, KAJ, and magic...and held his own...legitimately outplayed each at times. Won rings as best player on a that won During the golden era. Also was unquestionably one of the toughest competitors and leaders of all time.

ITs game were he was hobbled and fighting through the pain was a thing of legend.

So had all the skills- pass - shoot- defend - dribble - check check check check

Won on the biggest stage against all time greats. Check and CHECK

Had heart and was a leader - check and check

Had signature games and moments. Check and check

Inspired amd influnced rhe next generation of nba players...check. We actually had someone named Isaiah Thomas in the league for goodness sake - Check

Nash has a poor argument for best offensive player ever but yes he was a better offensive player than Isiah.

Isiah was a ridiculously good passer who fearless attacked and pressured the defense at the rim, had game breaking quickness and agility. Imagine if Tony Parker averaged like 5 assists more per game and was a better defensive player. That’s Isiah. Comparing him to Billups is insulting. Yes I would have Isiah in my top 40 and I’d have Billups outside my top 100. Billups and Isiah don’t have anything in common except both were on the Pistons.

It’s a mistake not to include IT- He was considered by many second to magic for a long time.

Comparing him to rondo is embarrassingly bad. Rondo and Billips wouldn’t compare themselves to the likes of IT

Payton is delusional enough to compare himself but he is a glorified Smart...and would be closer to someone like Holiday...but with a mouth and is closer to the Hardaway tier...and definitely not an all time all time great

I didn’t see Cousy- so I have no opinion

But beyond Cousy and my lack of intel on him...of all the guys you have here not in top 3, only IT was the best player on a championship team And that matters. If you drafted the Billips team that won the ring you think he would go first? Heck no...maybe not even 3rd.... some of these guys are not as good as Tony Parker lol

Damn IT Might be 3rd benign magic and Curry

Magic, Stockton, Zeke... then It's either Jason Kidd or Steve Nash. I didn't watch Oscar Robertson play and Steph is more 2 guard than PG.

Nash, even with MVPs was never the best player in the league...(IT wasn’t either but no one called IT greatest of all time at anything)

Baffles me how a person can rank a player they weren't alive to watch play.

Stockton was either 4th if you included Curry or 3rd....magic, zeke, Curry and Stockton.... Stockton only 4th cause he didn’t get a ring and the rest of the top 4 won it all as the best player on teams and in my mind - you play to win rings-

Interesting that AI not on this list either lol

I wouldn’t put AI in top 10 cause his leadership was so bad...but talent wise he was top 3...

Why is it insulting to call a player who ran 6 of the 12 greatest offenses ever the best offensive player? That man maximizes talent like no other. I guess you can make an argument for Oscar, Magic, or Jokic and I wouldn't fault you for it, but Nash is in that discussion. Those MVPs were pretty legitimate, the man is the greatest passer ever (or at least in the conversation) while being an elite ball handler and shooter.
I think of AI as a SG, or else I'd likely include him.
Billups outside the top 50 seems absurd to me.

Feels like a curry Homer thread...only thing he does well is shoot...His passing and defense is bad...Not a top 5 PG...
