Analysis: The Celtics will need a couple of things to happen to make this scenario possible. To start, they would have to beat the Bulls by at least 23 points on Tuesday night, to ensure they would finish with a higher point differential in pool play than the Magic (+22). However, a big win from them won’t be enough. They will also need the Nets to beat the Raptors, which would create a 3-way tie at 3-1, making point differential the tiebreaker. The Celtics would need to also top the Nets in point differential in this scenario so their margin of victory over the Bulls must be not only 23 points or more, but also eight points greater than the Nets’ margin of victory over the Raptors.
WILDCARD ADVANCING SCENARIO
One team from each conference that does not win their group will advance to the quarterfinals based on record and point differential as the tiebreakers. Here’s a look at the standings for the East wildcard spot.
Analysis: This path is still possible but is a bit of a long shot given the number of teams involved. The Celtics will need a big blowout over the Bulls on Tuesday night in all likelihood to pump up their total point differential from this group. They could also advance with simply a win in an unlikely scenario where the Nets, Cavs, Heat and Knicks all lose Tuesday night. Given that the Knicks (+18) have a big point differential edge already and face the weakest opponent of the night (Charlotte) among potential wildcard teams, Boston’s odds of leapfrogging them even with a small win seem remote.
