Yeah I think both can be true.
Scotties effort level and engagement is inconsistent.
The way he’s used isn’t always best for his skill set.
Exactly! Not sure why this continues to be a debate on this board. Sometimes he dogs it. Sometimes the team puts him in a terrible position. Sometimes he just needs to play through it like he did tonight. He wasn’t given the ball to start the fourth, he took it. And when he was successful, the team started giving it to him. THAT is how you ascend and respond to not being given the keys—you take them.
The lineup with Precious in for Jakob and Flynn in for Schroder gave him the confidence and rhythim to be able to do that - thank god Precious was decent today. He got rolling in that lineup and when Schroder came back in, Scottie kept the ball, and Schroder allowed it because it was working.
I'll continue to say this: the usage problem we have is due to Dennis Schroder. Dennis wants to run the team and he's not going to get off ball for Scottie to do so. There have been multiple instances now where Schroder has sulked in the back court when Scottie has refused to give him the ball on an inbounds. Darko is not going to be able to reign him in because no coach can - the only player Schroder has ever deferred to is Lebron.
Scottie definitely needs to demand it more and go take it. But we also need to remove Schroder from this equation.
