Shaedon Sharpe: next all-time great SG?

Post#1 » by GSWFan1994 » Sun Dec 3, 2023 2:09 pm

This just appeared on my YT feed:

It's always entertaining seeing the bench reactions.

Anyway, I'm very impressed with Sharpe's degree of improvement this season.

He's averaging 18/6/3 + 1.5 stocks, albeit with 41/34/84 shooting splits.

Amongst the Portland players, he's currently 2nd in points, 3rd in rebounds, and 5th in assists (with Anfernee Simons, with only 1 game played, ahead of him).

Most importantly, Sharpe is doing this as a 20 year old, with basically no college experience.

Just for comparison, Clyde Drexler was still in college when he was 20 year old. He averaged 8/3/2 as a 21 year old rookie, and his breakout season happened in the following season, when he was 22.

I know Sharpe's advanced stats may not look so good, but in retrospect, the fact that he's having such raw numbers at this age bodes extremely well for his future, IMHO. It shows he's already playing up with this level of competition, with the potential to improve much, much more as he goes further along in his development.

Now let's partake in an exercise of futurology: based on what you've seen from him, and what you expect him to improve, where do you think he's going to end up as player?

lets just hope that both scoot & shae pan out, if they do, portland trail blazers will be really good for a long time

good thing is were not trying to compete and they have all the time in the world to develop

that being said, hopefully both grant & brogdon will be off the team as soon as possible, that will accelerate their development

I never thought of it that way: every 21 year old who averages more than 3 boards a game is better than Clyde Drexler. Brilliant!

I'm mocking you, not baiting. Didn't need to do it but it is a bad point to throw in, your main question seems like a good one but anything that touches this 'Clyde at 20/21' thing will either make you waste time backing off from it or make the discussion/analysis worse. (And if it's actually part of your reasoning, then you definitely deserve the jab.)

^ Also I do like Sharpe's potential but another relevant point is that he's nearly leading the league in minutes per game, and he's not producing that that much. Looks like he's actually about 100th in points per minute, out of about 250 rotation guys in the league. That's a little BS-y for the usual reasons per-minute stats are, but it's definitely relevant.

His athleticism is ridiculous and Lebron is the only guy I can think of in recent memory who brings the ball that far back on tomahawk dunks. But the real question is why is he not interested in the dunk contest at all.

Love Sharpe's tools and am optimistic on him BUT....

He's not having a good season at all. Numbers look solid at first glance but under the hood nothing is going well. Neutral assist to turnover ratio, pretty bad scoring efficiency. 17.7 points on 15 shots in a whopping 37 minutes is not good scoring. He might have a bright future but he's a bad NBA player right now.

I like watching him and enjoy the crazy explosiveness off of two feet. Crazy length too.

Reminds me a lot of early Devin Booker as far as development goes. Lots of high counting stats but poor advanced stats. That's fine for someone his age, and you see the reasons why folks are high on him. He's going to be an all-star for sure, but not much point in predicting more than that at this junction.

This. Hes obviously wildly athletic and can certainly improve considering his talent and age but he’s at

-3.0 BPM
-2.1 EPM

.530 TS% and Portland is better when he goes the bench. Not close to all time great.

Needs to show a lot more before we even casually start throwing around "all-time great" but the trajectory has been good.

We always knew the athleticism was there, he's just got to raise his skill level now.

He seems really good for about 10 minutes a game, unfortunately he’s playing about 36 minutes a game.

If I remember right, he was going until he didn’t get into the rookie game and backed out.

Might be a pride thing.

Could be wrong of course.

He is the next Gerald Green. That is his ceiling.

Stop this nonsense and stop trying to convince yourselves and us on the GB or Trades & Transactions Thread otherwise.

Gerald Green was a knucklehead. No indication Sharpe is.
