WHy would it? The tournament means absolutely nothing? Its worth the same as the Clippers regular season and preseason banners!

It won't move the needle much, but as a legacy obsessed man (see: museum) I'm pretty sure he'd love to take the "first ever" IST title.
Consider the NBA's habit of naming trophies after players. If the Lakers win, 5-10 years from now when the IST is bigger and more established, they could call it the Lebron James trophy. He is probably aware of this, and like it or not, that's legacy too.

Right now, there are a lot of eyeballs on this tournament because it's the 1st one. And it's being marketed heavily. Kudos to the NBA for achieving its goal. We're also seeing LeBron James playing very well right now. So there are two narratives that are on the same path...
The Lakers are also about to face a rising (but 3rd "worst" defensive) team that plays a style that encourages high-scoring games and crazy stat lines. The opportunity is there for James to post a crazy good stat line with A LOT of media coverage watching...
Regardless of where the IST goes from here... James is the league's BEST brand building icon of this generation. And this week is only adding to his brand. Brands aren't built overnight. He's been carefully building his for two decades now. This would only add to that. A 47/14/12 line in front of millions of viewers, listeners, online clickers will get a lot of attention. Brand power.
And next week when we discuss James... or next decade... or in 2048... the 2023 IST tournament could help cement LeBron James' legacy whether the 2023 IST is even mentioned or not.

How much it will affect his legacy depends on the outcome, much like 2020. Lakers win? It means nothing. Lakers lose? It is a massive minus.

Winning one In-Season Tourney?
No.
Winning all of them?
Yes.
20 years from now, if this thing grows into a bigger deal for future fans (and players), having LeBron as the winner of the first few cups will definitely be an extra feather in his cap.
Hell, if he wins the first few Tournaments, they'll likely name the damn Trophy after him.

It's a nice footnote to his legacy but it doesn't do anything for the GOAT conversation.

Playing as well as he is in his 21st season will have an affect on his legacy.

its funny reading a lot of posts in threads like this who are acting as if LeBron forced the NBA into creating the IST so he could add to his legacy. lol. yall realize hes just playing the games in front of him like everybody else is? For some of you guys, the more he wins ANYTHING the more pathetic he looks to you. so weird.

Re: Would winning an in season tournament have any affect on Lebrons Legacy?
My answer is no, only because I think his legacy is set. I have him as GOAT and this doesn't move the needle much for me.
That said, people are mocking the idea that LeBron now has something Jordan doesn't, but introducing a new award is the only reason Jordan has some awards that players like Russell and Wilt don't have, and I've seen many fans tout Jordan's record-high 6 finals MVPS to argue why he is the best ever. It's just the evolution of the league.

Lebron with another MVP and Championship.
GOAT debate is officially over. Go debate with someone who doesn't know basketball.
Lebron just adding extra hardware at this point. He has nothing left to prove he should be retired at 39, yet he's still winning MVPs and championships. LeGoat!

Re: Would winning an in season tournament have any affect on Lebrons Legacy?
So if my math is correct, Lebron has 5 chips and 5 mvps and 5 fmvps? I think the IST mvp is both mvp and fmvp soooo
