Re: Trade Talk (Part 14): 2023-24 Edition
Hi everyone, first time poster here but I have actually been actively reading this forum since 2008!
Interestingly, I see people mentioning Monte Morris from the Pistons but why not take a flyer on Jaden Ivey? Sure, he is struggling defensively (and so is everyone in that team bar Thompson and their young center) but was looking very good in the 2nd half of last year. Also, he is not a vet but rather, a sophomore. Nevertheless, he is talented.
Seems Monty Williams isn’t a fan and not playing him much. He could be a good PG/SG scorer off the bench imo. Thoughts?

Even if he is out another month, If he’s healthy down the stretch, he’s by far my number one target. Can shoot it well enough to play on and off the ball. Veteran backup PG that will know his role. And knows Connelly.
I dont know if that matters but maybe Morris desire to prove himself will facilitate negotiations?

What do you think he costs us? Teams don’t usually sell cheap on young talent.

I actually wondered about Ivey too. That might be the ultimate "underappreciated" in the league right now.
Cost? Who knows....

He is raw as hell. But he has a ton of potential both in offense and defense.

That is my point. Good teams like us might move on from a prospect early because they are not a win now player. But bad teams like them, they horde young talent. They have the time and opportunity to develop them. Moreover, he was the number 5 pick last year. We lack future draft capital, and young talent with similar value. The best we could give in young talent is miller, and I don’t think we want to move our PF of the future to acquire a PG of the future. Nor do I think they would swap the two.

I think Ivey would be a great target, I'm just not sure how we could put together enough value for a trade. The Wolves don't have any 1st round picks that can be traded and I'm skeptical that Minott or Miller would have enough value to be the best asset in a deal. About the only path I can see to a deal would be if a third team really wanted Anderson and was willing to overpay a bit with a decent 1st (a pick expected to be in the late teens) that could be rerouted to Detroit.

DET are looking for stretch four, who can defend and shoot. Would you trade Miller, Milton and Moore for Ivey?

Let’s explore this. So this year Ivy eats Shake’s minutes. Miller and Moore haven’t really seen the floor and I doubt they see that much of it. We create 1.6 million in cap space that when paired with our 822,000 allows us to convert Garza to replace Miller. But, now we need to convert another G league guy because I don’t think we can afford a vet minimum (depends on the vet,) and must be at 14 players.
Next year, I see Kyle leaving (gonna be hard to afford him.) If this is true, Miller was supposed to replace Kyle, so we draft a PF, but that player still will not be ready. Garza might be good enough to push Naz to full time backup PF. I don’t know if Garza’s defense will be good enough to be a full rotation player, or if we just run 3 bigs without a fourth man. If we win a ring, maybe we get a solid vet chasing the ring. There are a lot of variables here.
I am not entirely sold on Miller being the next big thing. I think having a catch and shoot stud like Ivy would help the offense a lot. I think turning Ivy into a scheme defender might take a while, but thankfully we are number one in the NBA to this point and will likely have some room to find him minutes to do that (resting Mike.) I would need a smart cap guy like Shrink to bless the money, but yes, I would do it.

Yes, but I'm highly doubtful that the Pistons would move Ivey for that package.

He's clearly accepted a back up role and he seems to care purely about winning at this point.
There is a reason they call him Westbrick these days. Kinda prefer bad Shake to bad Rus just because Shake is still young and quick.
Who said Russ isn't quick? yeah he's not who he used to be but he's still pretty quick. Also he's shooting his career average. For up to 20 minutes a game he's probably one of the best players you could get for close to no money. Hed be easier and safer to get than trading real assets to another team.

The best realistic Jaden Ivey package Minnesota could make from a value standpoint is Jaden McDaniels. Minnesota wouldn’t and shouldn’t do it.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

Anyone we take must be a good 3 point shooter. Floor spacing is essential for our roster.

Or Naz. But bad teams don’t trade promising young players. They make them the cornerstone of the rebuild.

Welcome to the forum officially London Wolf - and lots of respect for being here since 2008!
Ivey has a lot of features I would be looking for in an addition. He is a back up PG, young with potential to be much better, locked up on contract, and used to Midwest winters. We need a starting PG in the future that doesn’t make much money, and he’s on rookie scale.
I agree with others that it would be tough to make a competitive offer though. Most mock drafts had Ivey as the #4 pick (some had him even higher), but I was happy to see Keegan Murray get picked ahead of him. However, the Pistons probably still see star or even superstar upside, and might only trade him for a similar trade package. I think Minott and Miller have upside, but even together, I’m doubtful that DET would trade Ivey for them. The other problem with trading for those two is that they are a couple of our cheapest contracts - replacing them could add salary to a payroll just under the lux.
Still, I like the Ivey idea, and I’m going to chase it a little. Good first post, and welcome to the boards .. officially.

As someone who appreciates Tyus Jones a lot, I would love having him back on Minnesota, but trading Kyle Anderson for him would be pretty scary.
The Wizards have no interest in Anderson anyway, so it's moot.

I'd rate McDaniels value as being significantly higher than Ivey. McDaniels has proven to have an elite NBA skill while still having significant upside on offense. Ivey is still all projection and to date has been a bit disappointing.
Also, McDaniels extension makes him extremely hard to trade this season due to the poison pill nature of the required incoming and outgoing salaries.

Isn't Ivey more a Miller or two 2nd or 2023 late 1st type trade?
