How does Atlanta Hawks get over mediocrity?
Hawks is one of the most mediocre teams in the NBA.
Last season they were 7th in East and were eliminated first round. They had a 41-41 record, were 17th in SRS and 18th in Net Rating.
Currently they are 10th in East, 9 wins 13 losses, 17th in SRS and 19th in Net Rating.
Trae Young and Dejounte Murray is not a bad duo, but they probably are not the one two punch material that can make you a real contender, even if Trae carried them to a successful 2021 PS. Jalen Johnson made a great progress this year, Onyeka Okongwu is making a steady progress, DeAndre Hunter is more or less stagnating since his rookie season, Capela and Bogdanovic are two solid veterans who can be "sacrificed" in a trade, but for what return?
What should they do to leave mediocrity, stop being around the play in spots, and become a real contender?

Beating Philly that year was the worst thing that could have happened to them. Made them try and go for it instead of continuing to build like they should.

2021 was a fluke, trade a PG depending on their relative values and go from there

Re: How does Atlanta Hawks get over mediocrity?
Trae struggled a lot early but their fans seem more disappointed in Dejounte than Trae, annoyed with OO lately, resigned with how Hunter has progressed, etc.
The real answer is actually have good defense though. They're awful there.

Trade Trae Young, Bogdanovic.
Get multiple picks, build better. Avoid undersized guards.

Trae Young’s TO career avg is 4.1, and his DBPM is negative. He depends on his FT% to keep his TS% above, cause his eFG% are AWFUL 48.9 with the 54.3 the overall average.

Their "superstar" is an inefficient chucker who's one of the worst defenders in the league, Atlanta needs to blow it up or they are destined to just be a tread mill playoff team for the next five years

They make the playoffs last year, losing to the celtics in the first round...But yeah, this is a true mediocre team.2021 is one of the all-time fluke, same for their 2015 season

Re: How does Atlanta Hawks get over mediocrity?
Margin of error is too small in this league now when it comes to how franchises operate. They had assets and squandered them. Cam was a bust. Hunter is close to it. Collins wasn't necessarily a hit as far as a reliable franchise big man goes the way say a Derrick Lively for the Mavs turns out to be. They wasted cap space on Bogi, who is amazing don't get me wrong, but a team that young should be using cap space to eat bad contracts and acquire assets imo. And of course the biggest gaffe...drafting Trae Young over Luka Doncic.
It's literally LeBrover for them. If you're trying to build around a tier 2-3 star like Trae you need to HIT on all the margins to really compete. But that's hard to do, and it's too late for the Hawks now when it comes to the NBA arms race.

LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

Re: How does Atlanta Hawks get over mediocrity?
it's less about trading Trae Young and more about what were they thinking when they built this roster because so many things don't make sense about it
Look, Trae Young is a guaranteed top 8 offense in the league. Ever since 2020-2021 the Hawks have been anywhere from 8th to 2nd in offense. The defense has always killed them, and no matter how BAD Trae Young is on defense, one BAD defender should not be responsible for a team being one of the worst in the league defensively.
Dejounte Murray is supposed to be an elite defender, I haven't watched a ton of him in Atlanta, my assumption is he's fine. Then look at the rest of the roster. Bogdonavic, Saddiq Bey, is DeAndre Hunter even a good defender? The weird thing is that their opponents aren't even technically outperforming them in any clear #s. They aren't really getting outrebounded, not really getting to the line more. The only clear thing is their opponents have a bit more blocks.
I'm sure there's more analysis to be done, I never bought the idea of Clint Capela remaining their starting center, it really felt like he fell of after the 2020-2021 season. The other option is Okongwu who hasn't really transformed into what he was supposed to become for them.
This team has a bunch of weird pieces and weak pieces, I have no clue why they never expressed interest in a guy like..Myles Turner maybe?

I did some digging
Basically the Hawks are at the bottom of league in a few areas
1. EFG % allowed - they give up too many Easy looks
2. Defensive rebound % is horrible and they are at bottom of league on 2nd chance points
3. Allow way too many points in paint

By trading one of their guards. They are playing like 90 million dollars on three guards in Trae Bodgan and Murray . Stupid roster management.

Orlando has a lot to offer and should consider it.
Brooklyn
Miami
If I were the pelicans I’d consider throwing Zion for Trae
Wemby and Trae would be devious together

Re: How does Atlanta Hawks get over mediocrity?
It may not look like it but Trae isn’t some transcendent talent that a team should build around. He’s probably in the same conversation as a Kyrie Irving.
People blaming the players around Trae is exactly what’s wrong with the direction of blame.

They either need to trade at least one of Murray and Trae or trade the others for 3&D players.
