If Embiid leads the league in scoring while also setting the PER record its a lock for him. Not to mention the Sixers are 17-4 when he plays which is equivalent to a 68 win pace.
Lol as if PER factors in. Guess who had a PER last year that was a whole point higher than the man that won the award.
Jokic fans last season: playoff success doesn’t matter when awarding a third MVP; number of team wins doesn’t matter (it is how many wins the individual player was involved in); Jokic has the highest PER in history.
This year: You can’t give an MVP to a player who will probably get knocked out in the second round (Jokic got knocked out in the first and second rounds in his MVP years); let’s ignore that Embiid has 17 wins and the sixers have lost all matches with him, while the nuggets have won without Jokic and won when he was tossed out early in the game; Embiid has the highest PER but it doesn’t matter because it is against bad teams (even though 3 of the 5 worst teams are in the West).
Can’t have it both ways.
To be fair, I don’t care about things like PER much but if I did, I’d be arguing it at the end of the year, not a quarter in. It doesn’t have much weight to me right now.
But for me, I don’t try to declare someone the MVP in December. It’s a futile exercise, and I don’t chirp in these threads much in the early parts of the season even if this is a process and a marathon of sorts.
I’m not by any means saying Embiid can’t be the MVP. I just prefer to list a top-4-5 because it can sway so much on a game to game basis. Maybe it’s a cop out but I also think it’s a healthier way to look at things opposed to making endless arguments for a player.
So when I say that Jokic/Embiid/Giannis/SGA is the top 4 right now, I’m saying I think these guys are in the lead, but it’s too close to call right now as they all have arguments in their favor.
