I'd say that's generally true of all two-way players; teams don't sign them to be regular rotation guys (save for break-glass-in-case-of-emergency situations), but rather as developmental pieces that can be cultivated to hopefully fill that role down the line.
Maledon was ideal in that capacity; his jumpshot needed work but the talent and decision making were clearly there, he flirted with triple doubles when thrust into starting duty last year and he was only 22. We could have continued to groom him for a position of need (love Ish but he's 35 and not the long term solution)...
Instead of jettisoning him for Mensah (whose effort and courage I admire after being thrust into waters way over his head but who has no business on an NBA court), we should have cut bouknight and plucked a high performing young PF from D-League to kick the tires.
