So what is wrong with Franz?

Post#1 » by byeganyo » Mon Dec 18, 2023 12:58 am

25 games played and he has shot over 50% only 5 times - against Detroit, Washington, Charlotte and Denver, so save for Denver not teams that take the games very seriously right now. It's easy to see he is trying, but still he is falling flat. What's your explanation?

Nothing. He's just in a slump and sometimes it takes time to drag yourself out of it.

It is a slump but him and coaches did talk about changing his shot mechanics a bit so it wasn't as much of a "load up" sort of shot. I wonder if there is correlation between that and his shot looking more flat.

He’s in a slump in his third year playing professional basketball against one of the best teams in the league.

He’ll be fine.

Even if it is... THAT still needs getting accustomed to. Just cuz you practice it in the gym.... and even in practice.... doesn't mean it will immediately translate on the court when under pressure. And in this Boston game you could tell he was just forcing something to go right.

Cole must be hurt. Moe had a bad sprain, too.

OK, it's a kneejerk to an extent, but it's not only this game and its not a small sample.

Franz will be fine. Boston is one of the toughest defense to play against. Franz will be fine

His three point % is legit to question imo, it's been 25 games

People expect too much from Franz. He's solid starter but not all-star material. He's kind of predictable off the dribble. He's got spots and if you can make it tough then you have a good shot of taking him out of the game.

It is likely a slump but he’s been struggling most of the season not just this game.

Something's wrong, whatever he's trying to do with his shot isnt working. Cole, Suggs, and Paolo are all shooting over 38%, and even Black has been better than expect, and out of nowhere Franz forgets how to shoot  who wouldve known.

Im not worried about him long term though.

He leads the team in win shares and is second in vest points. OnOff is way down but that is due to the strong bench performance. The biggest concern for me is his 3P%.

He's fine.

It's fair to question Franz's shot specifically. It's looking pretty rough, he had alot of bad open missed today, and it's not even looking good out his hands

I'm more so worried because changing his shot midseason is tough, and he honestly should've taken a year off from the German National Team for for international play to work on it.

Now next offseason is the Olympics, so it'll cut his offseason short again. Leaving us to wait till Summer 2025 for a potential full offseason for him to work on his game and refine his shot

He's also shooting worse at the rim compared to last. But I think he can turn that around this season

Franz plays well off of WCJ (and vice versa). Wonder if that, plus the adjusted shooting mechanics, is throwing him off a bit.

I’m not worried about Franz. He is constantly modifying his game. Looks like a slump, confidence, and some changes to his shot. I fully expect for him to fix all that and level up while doing. It could easily take 10 to 20 games for him to figure it out so I’m going to give him the space he needs to do it.

We need him so he gets a very long leash. Good news Suggs has leveled up on finishing and shooting this season. Fultz and WCJ will help make it a bit easier on offense once they come back.

He's good, but not great. Still ascending, so I don't think he's plateau'ed yet, but I also don't think there's a ton of untapped potential either. He's probably at about 90% of what his best is. He will be a solid #3 option on a contender. Right now, he's forced to be more, which works against bad teams, but not good ones.

I think this dead on accurate…and that’s not a knock on Franz. He’s, imo, more like prime Hedo than a #1 option. If he’s your #3 - you’ve got a chance to be a really good team.

He came into the league close to fully formed…he’s improved but it’s more refinements than the kind of epiphanies we hope for with most rookies these days (who come in as clueless lumps of clay). I expect Franz will improve his defense and his 3pt shooting but he feels pretty close to “complete”. He might be an All-Star if the offense is put more in his hands, but I don’t think that’s really the optimal likely vision.

Regarding recent “slump”…just temporary reality check. Brown is equally skilled but far stronger and more athletic, particularly defensively. Franz was having his way with lesser opposition. He’ll bounce back. Shooting tends to go bad when everything else goes bad and you tighten up With frustration. I hope the team is able to handle the recent challenges mentally, not spiral into a slump, and remember what brought them so much growth. In the meantime, a realistic FO should be working the phones rather than expect good players like Black, Cole, Suggs, WCJ, etc to wake up one day as All-Stars. Suggs has the mentality to be much more- but perhaps not the skill level (yet?).
