Restricted Free Agents - New Contract Predictions

Post#1 » by Mascot » Mon Dec 18, 2023 2:37 am

Just looking through the list of RFA coming up this offseason and a few caught my eye. What do you think their next contracts will be?
feel free to add others if you like. This was the list that I was interested in, assuming none have signed contracts that arent listed, or i looked at the wrong list accidently.

Raiquan Gray - BKN - two year two way deal with San Antontio signed in March
Patrick Williams - CHI
Isaac Okoro - CLE
Vlatko Cancar - DEN
Jalen Smith - IND
Cole Swider - MIA
Obi Toppin - IND
Immanuel Quickley - NY
Simone Fontecchio - UTAH
Max Christie - LAL

Only guy I see getting more than MLE money is Quickly. Pretty weak RFA class if this is it, haven't looked at the full list

its not everyone but its the ones that I felt might switch teams, a lot have signed contract extensions already and there is not much left.

James Wiseman and Killian Hayes probably get more than half the players on this list and they suck. I'm guessing they don't end up getting QOs, but sign 1-year roughly tax MLE contracts just based on a team believing in their status as draft prospects a few years ago and believing they can develop better than Detroit or something.

Quickley reportedly wanted 25M a year before the season, and I'd have given it to him. Figure in FA he could get up to 30M per & bet on him living up to it.

If Quickley first gets traded to a team (like ORL or SAS, for example) that will absolutely match, teams will be reluctant to make RFA offers with little chance of success and he could come in under $22 and be a steal. If he’s stuck in NY, I could see a $25-30 offer come in to force NY’s hand. RFAs rarely change teams anymore - if their present team values them as an integral piece. We may be entering a more sensible fiscal phase for GMs lobbing crazy offers. The new CBA is more punitive and makes it harder for wild spenders to trade themselves out of cap trouble. This also may spur teams to try hard to unload big contracts (CHI) that aren’t working out - while they can.

If OG gets the $30m he’ll probably claim on the UFA market, I think he’ll prove disappointing. Great elite role player, but…if you’re not a contender, that’ll be a mistake. DET, for example, would be foolish to do that just to maybe sniff the play-in. PHI, on the other hand, has positioned themselves to make that kind of finishing move.

Pat Williams, Okoro, and Toppin will settle in around MLE level. Even with the cap going up, free spending on marginal unproven players might cease. The pay gap between stars and supporting cast is only widening. Can’t win much without a star or two, but can’t build around them with anything but bargains.

Okoro is in that Mo Bamba range where he may not even get an RFA tender since it's high enough that he might take it on day 1.

Luckily NY has a ton of room below the 2nd apron for another season. In 2024 things will get complicated for us if we don't make a big consolidation trade to upgrade our #1 option, as Randle & Brunson can opt out and Grimes will be an RFA as well. But this summer we could give IQ & OG 30M a year deals and still have plenty of space to re-sign Hartenstein & McBride below that crippling 2nd apron.

This team was printing money for Dolan even when they were paying tax for a trash team, so the financial consequences of being in the tax aren't scary to us. But the restrictions that come with that 2nd apron would make it a lot harder to complete that big "kawhi trade" that we need.

Think Patrick Williams will end up a bargain. 22 years old. Draws fouls and trending towards being a less assisted player. Could breakout when he is 24.

I really wanted a Pat for Obi trade this summer but we went with DDV instead. Even if his self-creation never materializes, that defense, intelligence, and shooting can help good teams.

its a list of 2nd rate RFA, the top tier will not move and will get the money they want from their own teams or another team and then their own team will have to match. I want to know what the fans that go for these teams think their 4 year RFA are worth.

If that chart is supposed to be in descending order of desirability then Fontecchio should be no lower than the second row.
