Very sad to see someone pass away from cancer that young. He was a hell of a college player and was a good player when he was here before he was ultimately traded. He has a long career and was successful as an analyst for the tar heels; not only that he also gave back to the community and seemed like a genuinely great person.

RIP Montross

Wow, that is young. Especially with today's technology.
Condolences to his Family.

OMG!

I remember him from his first season with the Celtics and you know despite the criticism he was actually pretty good but he got devolved as the NBA went into different directions so his play and physicalness and style didn't work in the new NBA but for that first year I thought he was really good and it seem like you might have some valuable trading piece but you never knew with Pitino running things, that man was a hazard a biohazard.

Met him once at a Home Depot during his rookie season. Hell of a nice guy. I was just a kid then and he was the first Celtics player I ever met. Rest in peace.

rest in peace, big Eric

I liked him at UNC and while he wasn't the guy I wanted them to draft (wanted Jalen Rose, still do..), but I was sold on him as a starting center for a decade or more -- until he wasn't.

his rookie year, 30mpg, 10 and 7
his second year, 26mpg, 7 and 6 and his FT% completely fell off a cliff (from 64% as a rookie to 38%!)
then: we traded him. for what? I need to check. OMerGerd Montross and the #9 pick in 1996 (Samaki Walker) for the #6 in 1996 (Antoine) and what became the #5 in 1997 (Mercer). Good trade, whoever was making trades for the Celtics at that point!

most importantly though -- and I mean this -- **** cancer

Was excited by the pick at the time. Rode him to a title in NBA Live 96. If we hadn't traded him, we likely* would have picked Kobe!

*we probably would have done something dumb and not drafted him

Sad news. He was one of only a few good players to watch during his rookie season, when the C's were not good at all. I remember seeing him play at the old Boston Garden alongside Dominique, in the Garden's final year. I think I still have the game program. RIP.
