Would any other team hire Joe as their HC? – (Reminisce Thread)

Post#1 » by GoGreen » Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:57 am

I don't think Joe is going anywhere, but I'm just curious what the board thinks of him.

Say this off season he's available for whatever reason, would any team hire him as HC?

I say no. Probably as an assistant, sure, but he is not HC material yet.

Not me, I want nothing to do with the guy, if the Celtics win the championship it's because of KP, Tatum not turtling so much and Brown being dynamic and dominant

Mazz stands in the way of such things he's a hindrance not a help. I'm definitely sure that Tatum and him are not a good combo to have on the same team. One or the other, but not both.

Being that he has the highest winning percentage as a coach ever, I think Joe needs to seriously step up his level.

If the Celtics fired Joe Mazzulla, he would be hired by another NBA team in a minute. He needs to keep growing and improving but so do a lot of his players.

I'm sure this thread existed many years ago when Ty Lue was starting coaching. We'll see how Joe evolves but Lue has turned into a pretty good coach. I think just based on team success (even if talent driven), someone certainly would

This team is talented but it is not win 78% of the games while having one of the hardest schedules talented. If you take Porzingis and put him on the, oh I don't know, the Wizards or the Mavs, no one's going to gush over his skills or abilities. Same with White. Hauser is an UDFA and Pritchard was much maligned coming into the season. Even Tatum is not a bona fide top 10 guy this season, with how good the NBA is. This is not the Big Three Celtics yet we are winning like them.

The Bold part in Blue pretty much sums up one of the Celtics biggest problems in closing games.

As good as Tatum is, he's not a top 10 closer, and probably not a Top 15 CLOSER. That's the Celtics biggest problem.

In no particular order, the Top 15 CLOSERS (some of whom play on MUCH WEAKER teams):

Joel Embiid
Nikola Jokic
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Ja Morant
Giannis Antetokuonmpo
Luka Doncic
Tyrese Haliburton
Anthony Davis
Kevin Durant
Kahwi Leonard
LeBron James
Devin Booker
Donovan Mitchell
Damian Lillard
Steph Curry

I honestly can't say that Tatum is any better than Sabonis or Markkanen in closing games. And the Celtics are a MUCH better team than the Kings or Jazz. De'Aaron Fox is probably pretty close to Tatum as a closer; so are Jimmy Butler & Tyrese Maxey.

And Tatum is clearly the CELTICS BEST PLAYER.

If you add in Two-Way Defensive ability, Tatum would rank ahead of a few of the more offensively SUCCESSFUL players.

The thing is, Porzingis is the Celtics 2nd Best Player, but probably
a better choice for a last second screen & roll or pick & pop dual action play.

Unfortunately, Tatum hardly ever runs that play with Porzingis, although Jaylen Brown does.

Only if a team is interested in a coach that has a track record of building squads that are elite on both ends of the floor and maintaining good relationships with his players.

Only if their last coach slept with chicks on staff and they desperately needed a coach that looks like a mURderEr!! to smooth things over.

Mazzulla would be my COTY just for convincing Jaylen to shift his mindset/approach of the game and empowering White to become whatever version of him we're getting right now.

Have you SEEN some of the people NBA teams hire? Of course he'd be hired.

But that doesn't make him great or anything.

Maybe a way to confuse opposing defenses would be to have
White on one side of the floor with Tatum,
Brown on the other side of the floor with Porzingis,
and have an option to run either action. Holiday might have to be the trigger man making the choice. It would be more flowing than just having Tatum pound the ball behind the line like he often does.

Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

How many Utah Jazz games have you watched this season and last? For me, it's at least 70 games. And I stand by my statement.

It's a simple question, so please respond with a #.

Nobody remembers how Spo and Ty Lue were looked at as coaches early on? Or we just all remember too well how Doc was viewed as a coach early? Could go either way. Ultimately though I don’t think Joe is going to be a reason we don’t win a title IF we don’t win a title.
