I was scrolling through Spotrac, looks like Pacers are the prime team to deal Rubio to again. James Johnson is non guaranteed so they could waive him to create the roster spot and they have enough cap space to absorb Rubio's deal. We can throw them however many 2nd rounders they want to facilitate the trade; we can even throw them some cash since they will probably buyout his contract.

Who's expendable over there that is useful over here?

Jordan Nwora, TJ McConnell, Isaiah Jackson, Obi (probably in increasing likelihood)?

I don't want any of them lol

I doubt they give up Jackson, he's their back-up 5.

McConnell puts us in the tax and I'd rather play CPJ anyway.

Obi would either put us into the tax or only a couple thousand short so we couldn't fill the 15th roster spot.

Idk much about Nwora but i like his size, if they wanted to throw him in, i guess.

I really just wanna clear off the Rubio contract with no return money. I'd say TT and Merrill have earned the right to be guaranteed so just need to fill spots 14 and 15. I would give CPJ one but if the front office had different plans, I get it.

I had a pair of recycled shoes, those things sucked.

I can appreciate the idea but from a comfort perspective, pass.

Obi would actually be very ideal with Cleveland. He would be a very useful backup especially with his ability to stretch the floor. If Indy is willing to make that trade? Screw it, go for it.

Nah, if it puts the Cavs into the tax which i think it would be very close, the Cavs cannot go into the tax this season.

Because it starts the clock on the repeater tax, Toppin isn't a guy you go into the tax for.

But it's a moot point, just did the math, Cavs would have $95,462 left below the tax if it was a straight Toppin for Rubio swap.

I think I'd still rather have the money and just have the Pacers absorb Rubio into their cap space.

We still need additional depth. Toppin is a pretty good fit. I don’t see the problem here.

He starts for them, so it's highly unrealistic Rubio is returning any other team's starter.

Let's just clear Rubio off the books and have the $6 million to fill spot 14 and 15

Mo Williams despite being unofficially retired at that point got the cavaliers Kyle Korver in return. Different circumstances I know but I just wanted to point that out.

With that said… can someone explain to me why any team would even want to trade for Rubio in the first place? I don’t think he’s coming back to the sport, so what would be the point?

35 year old Korver also cost the Cavs a protected 1st rounder (plus the salary of Dunleavy), LeVert cost a protected 1st too (for Rubio last time), as you're aware Cavs have no 1st rounders to trade.

There's no real incentive for any team to trade for Rubio, hence why he's still being paid by the Cavs and isn't even in the country.

I would give whatever team has the space to facilitate Rubio off our books be it an exception or otherwise upwards of 5 seconds and i can't find the cash tractor for this season but last season teams could send out $6,363,000 so it has to be around that amount, so I'd send the cash with Rubio for this season's deal.

The whole point is the Cavs need cap sapce to fill Rubio's spot and the 15th spot. I guess potentially one other slot too, if Merrill's wrist injury proves to be serious prior to his guarantee date.

Meh, not really. Stepien Rule.

24 can't be traded bc it's protection from not having 25, 26 is a double swap but can't be traded anyway bc it's protection from not having 27, 28 is a swap but can't be traded bc it's protection from not having 29, and 30 can't be traded since the Cavs don't have 29.

So in your estimation, which 1st rounder do the Cavs have available to trade between now and February 8th at 3pm Eastern time?

No, why would it? Ted Stepien tanked the Cavs franchise when he owned it. That rule is the only way to protect owners/front offices from themselves.

Teams circumvent it by trading swap rights and picks far in to the future, but its still in place.

Return to Cleveland Cavaliers
