Could use this thread every time a QB is about to be paid.
So Trevor Lawrence is coming up on da $260 million extension after this season.
Jacksonville started out 6-2, have had some injuries but 8-7 now.
Lawrence has had moments but not nearly as many as you'd expect from a guy who was hyped as the best prospect since Luck.
Jaguars are not in a position to draft a potential replacement but what are they really? Marginal playoffs team? You would think they'd need to win at least a playoffs game this season for the team to feel like giving Trevor a big contract is worth it.
In almost 3 full seasons, he has 56 TDs but 37 ints. Jags beat Chargers 31-30 in the playoffs and then lost 20-27 to KC. So you might think they're on a good trajectory.
It doesn't appear that he took a jump this season.
But again like the Cowboys, you get rid of your starting QB without a proven replacement, you're going into rebuild.
For the Jags, maybe not that big of a deal unless they show that they can compete with the best teams, so getting to the AFC Championship this season or next would be a reason to believe.
But if they're one and done or get eliminated in the divisional run again, it seems they're just a treadmill team.

Jags first have to decide if Lawrence is the guy and their guy. If he is not the guy for them, move on if you think he has reached his ceiling. Don't make the same mistake as the Cowboys. Some still think they can win a super bowl. After 8 years, I say, hell no without question. Don't be afraid to pull the trigger.

I think Lawrence has potential. I think it’s too early to pull the trigger on him.
He’s never really broken the turnover bug though. But it’s hard to imagine moving on from a 6-6 guy with a cannon and great character
They’d get a god offer for him though lol

Re: Speaking of big QB contracts ...
Whether they should can be debated but they will pay him, there is no doubt. For teams like Jaguars championship isnt the main goal, they want to stay relevant and put butts on the seats and Lawrence gives them that. After that they can go 9-8, 10-7 for a decade and I dont think ownership would care that much. As opposed to losing him and losing the face of the franchise.
I think they could have won with him on rookie contract, or come close but they wasted so much time with Urban and Baalke. It will be very difficult after he gets paid, especially if they keep Baalke.

Lawrence has been quite good this season; I'm sure they will extend him. The OL and WR aren't very good and need upgrades.

Re: Speaking of big QB contracts ...
Most of the QB's in the league are trash. I was listening to a podcast the other day and they were talking about the golden days with Rivers, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Big Ben, etc....essentially the second tier was just awesome and we don't really have that anymore.
Press Taylor is a trash coordinator also. The dude just calls weird plays...the draw they do with ET is strange because they don't give him room to operate in enough space. The Jags offense is like a 90s NBA team...no room to operate it seems like.
I would max him without hesitation to answer your question

Re: Speaking of big QB contracts ...
I think you need to watch the Jags to see it, so it's understandable that people don't, but while Trevor does need to improve, a lot of this is on the roster and playcalling
Jags O line is one of the worst in the league, especially on the interior. There is zero run game (if you take out Trevor's rushes, the average YPC of the Jags is 3.3) which means Trevor needs to do so much more just to stay on the field
On paper, the receiving core is good, but Ridley has been hit or miss, Zay Jones has missed a ton of games, and now Kirk is done for the season. Right now, it's Ridley, Engram, and then the WR2 is Jamal Agnew or Tim Jones
Since Kirk went out, the team is comparable to the Chiefs. You have a really good receiving TE, an inconsistent WR1, and then a bunch of nothing at receiver. Obviously Mahomes is better than Trevor, but you still see him struggling under similar circumstances
And that's without talking about Press Taylor
The biggest issue that's solely on Trevor is the fumbling, which is actually a really big issue. But other than that, he's been fine. I also think the thing is that people saw the ridiculous streak he was on at the end of last year and are comparing him to that, when if you look at his last year in aggregate, he's been about as good. He's been more consistently good this year, just hasn't had a streak like last year
You pay him without thinking about it. He is good enough to build around. SoS has also been brutal, only the Bengals and Cardinals have had a harder schedule than the Jags this year.
