It is also particularly dumb to have the "title or i hate my life mentality" in sports that have single elimination, you can have the best team in the world and still fall short if things dont line up for you for one game. People dont understand how much luck is involved in getting 3-4 wins in a row without tripping, you just gotta hope your team puts itself in a position to get there.
So I’m assuming by your post that when the cowboys lose in the playoffs this year that i should still be proud of my team? Three double digit win seasons and the playoffs in a row? For me absolutely not.
In the present, a team like the Texans can be happy. It was a good season with progress made towards the ultimate goal. But if in 10 years from now we look back and see that they never won a SB then it was all for nothing and must be considered a failure.
You just answered yourself, you should be happy with your team if you see progress. Getting to NFC title game would be a progress for Cowboys, if you lose in divisional year after year yeah you are a failure.
and being proud is not a binary, yes/no preposition. when I hit my PR while squatting I am proud of myself. I would be more proud of myself if I broke the world record but I am not going to hang my head in shame if I cant break the world record.
