No amount of raising can overcome instincts. They sense fear and they will absolutely rip your jugular out. Not trying to come across like an ass and I have nothing against the breed but they are very dangerous and no amount of training tells me otherwise

You realize your uneducated histrionics here make the problem worse?

Would you leave a well brought up pit bull alone with a toddler or infant?

What is a pit bull? Like I've seen 'pit bulls' in all shapes, build, size. Probably depends on the specific dog and what you mean by 'alone' but probably still not alone with a toddler or infant. I wouldn't leave my toddler alone in the same room as my sister's beagle or any dog I didn't know well.

I’m implying it’s my own dog…when I was 3 my parents got me a bichon and I was left alone with it. They wouldn’t have done that with a pitbull.

My wife and I considered it with a 3 year old at home. We fostered when he was 1 and had some really good dogs we talked about keeping. At the end of the day, we decided against it since we travel so much and it's a lot of work separating the kids and dogs. There was extra consideration of safety of the dog, but it's just unwise to leave a toddler alone with any dog. My sister's beagle snipped at his face when he got to close, my parents border Collie got nippy as it got order, and my friends yellow lab and my other friends weimaraner plowed him over a few times and those are 'all great family dogs'.

Again, pit bull is such an open term and not a specific breed so it widely varies on the type of dog you are actually talking about

Little lap dog next to him appears to be the offender.

Great pitbull chat when it was a Rottweiler.

Aaron Gordon owns a Rottweiler so I'm going to make the fair assumption that this Rottweiler is his. There was a post earlier in the thread that talked about a Denver Nuggets reported heavily implying that the dog who bit AG was not his own. Therefore, I think it's fair to rule the Rottweiler out.

Which, if the above is true, may mean that the attacker was the smaller dog in that picture.

Unless you know something I don't, there's been no statements that he was bitten by his own dog. All we know is that he was attacked by a dog on Christmas day.

But I agree the subject of pit bulls being dropped into the chat was stupid and unnecessary.

I hope Aaron Gordon recovers fully and quickly, and comes back to the court feeling and playing better than ever. He's honestly been one of my favorite players in the NBA since the Denver move. His versatility on both ends is elite. While he's not a monster scorer, he does a little bit of everything on offense: he's a terrific passer, a post-up brute, a great cutter and screener. He's not a good shooter, but he's not a non-shooter either.

Lost in all the dog talk is that Denver just lost their starting power forward, and a guy who unlocks basically all of their best lineups. Their starting lineup is hilariously dominant, and Gordon makes life a lot easier for some of their 1-way players. Who is going to start? Peyton Watson? Zeke Nnaji? Those guys don't normally play much next to Jokic. Maybe they'll go small and all offense with Julian Strawther? Move MPJ to PF and play Christian Braun?

I think what you said at the end is most likely but I’m just guessing. Move MPJ to PF and start one of Braun, Watson, or Holiday. I believe Holiday started when AG missed a few games earlier in the season.

Strawther and Braun all look like reasonable options.

Ah, yeah, I forgot they have Justin Holiday. I'll say this about Justin Holiday. He's definitely good enough to be a break in case of emergency starter. He defends well, he shoots well and he plays with energy. Losing Aaron Gordon is definitely a loss for the Nuggets and they definitely need him healthy in the playoffs but they can survive this injury for the time being. They have the depth to survive it.

Pitbulls aren't near the top, but bite force is plenty strong enough to do significant damage. This article says Pitbulls were once known as "Nanny Dogs" because they protected children, and were only more recently bred as fighting dogs.

yeah their size makes them more dangerous in a way because they are quicker and more agile than bigger breeds. combine that with being pure muscle and having huge mouths and they can do a ton of damage if they want to.

they are an anxious breed but there are a lot of those. it's just a shame that some people don't train their fight/flight response properly because they can do a lot of damage if they choose the former. i worked at a vet clinic for 5 years where my main job was restraining patients and was never worried about pit bulls, in fact most of them were super friendly after treatments were done. breeds like shepherds, chihuahuas, shibas, frenchies, rottweilers, etc. were often more difficult to deal with. i'd say chow chows are the ones people should be most wary of, luckily they're pretty uncommon in north america. they are hard to train, extremely territorial of their owners, unpredictable and like pit bulls have huge mouths.

regardless of what kind of dog attacked gordon i hope he recovers well and hopefully his hand isn't mangled.

You know why "Pitbulls" have such a bad reputation? Because people keep repeating the wrong info that Pitbulls maul everyone. Then people see a headline and it confirms their fears. Talk about confirmation bias. It's national headline when a Pitbull mauls someone, but you'll never hear it when they do this: https://www.today.com/parents/family/hero-pit-bull-saves-child-detroit-fire-rcna76785

I grew up around dogs all my life and I've never, ever ever seen a single Pitbull act aggressive. You can convince me that Zion is skinnier than Chet Holmgren but you'll never convince me that Pitbulls are naturally more aggressive than every other dog breed.

There’s a vid on Reddit I saw of a pit completely unprovoked locking it’s jaw onto a woman’s leg walking down a street, the only way he let go was when a bystander choked out the dog. There’s a whole subreddit on them attacking and maiming people/children. They’re just not worth it. But whatever, people will believe what they want to believe, just know it’s a dog specifically bred for fighting and killing. But your pittie snookums would never!

Except it's the trait that they have beed bred for, like dominant traits of scent or sight hounds or herding breeds. We're talking tendencies and consequences of them and ignoring or downplaying these don't make them false.

I’ve had two pit mixes and been around plenty of full pits and bullies. Nearly all I’ve met are sweethearts.
There’s been a lot of good and necessary work to destigmatize the breed in recent years.

But they do have a higher incidence of traits that can become problems in the wrong hands. They are more predisposed to dog aggression. They can be high drive. They’ve been bred for strong jaws and an inclination to use them, and they’re ridiculously strong.

So if you have a pit that wasn’t thoughtfully bred or socialized or is unintentionally put in a high stress situation, or all of the above, it’s potentially dangerous.

Pit enthusiasts will tell you that’s all human error, and outside of the genetic component they’d be right. But guess what? Humans make errors. No professional trainer is perfect, let alone your average pet owner. And with a pit, training mistakes are MUCH more consequential than with a chihuahua, the actual #1 dog in terms of US bite incidents.

My question for anyone who’d want a pit is, why? Why would you want a dog that’s so unforgiving of human error, either in training and breeding, and has a track record of causing serious injury?

The desirable traits (playful, loving) can be found in other dogs with fewer liabilities. Most people, if they were honest, would tell you it’s because they like the way they look. And I can relate to that, they do look awesome. But I don’t blame cities/countries that decide this isn’t a good enough reason and ban pits and other dogs bred for power and aggression (Dogo Argentino, Presa, etc).
