I’ll be satisfied if he becomes a reliable enough 3rd option. His contract is practically high end role player/average starter in today’s NBA so I’m not stressing over it. Not nearly as bad as paying Jakob $20 million to sit on the bench when we need to win a game

GTJ is another wild comparison. You guys dont watch hoops.

I player in their 20s making $27m aav can be easily traded in this league. Worst case scenario he doesn’t pan out and we flip him. Right now at least we get some bench scoring.

The two are sooooo far apart in skillset. It indeed is a wild comparison.

Cant wait to see how he does playing behind Barnes and Siakam. I'm expecting better efficiency than his NY days.

It’s not a comparison of player types. It’s a comparison of what they provide in both ends. You can’t deny that RJ has a more versatile skillset than Gary. Gary has a very limited skillset and is as much of a chucker/ poor decision maker as RJ. I’d rather have the more talented guy chuck up bad shots.

Ideally we’d have no chucking but if I had to pick between it coming from one of them it would be RJ

Not the biggest fan, he's kinda like another Andrew Wiggins where they have a lot of the tools and talent to be really good but just haven't focused and put things together. Reaaaaally hoping he can buckle down and polish his game up behind Scottie and Pascal (if Pascal aint traded)
Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.

RJ will help us get to the free throw line more that’s for sure. Welcome home my guy. Love this trade already.

Any RJ hate in the context if this *trade* is just weird.

You need salary balancing in any deal, and RJ makes just ~$3M more than OG this season (OG will easily make more than RJ after this offseason).

To meet salary matching conditions via a 23yr old legit starter with some potential upside is pretty much what you want. Better than an expiring or useless player imo, and definitely acceptable as a secondary piece (IQ is obviously the huge win here).

I've watched him a bunch on Team Canada. I do think he's able to play within his limitations, a lot about how he "looks" here will come down to role and any developmental juice the Raps can apply.

I'm surprised so many people are down on Barrett. He's been very inconsistent, but he has shown flashes and he has the tools to be more than what he is now. At 23 and locked up for ~27M/year until 2027, he's a good piece to have moving forward.

Unless he substantially improves, he will probably be moved (if a Siakam extension is done)

IQ is gonna be with the Raps moving forward so either Siakam and or RJ are being moved to get under the tax (unless Raps are contenders with this move)
raf1995 wrote:I just don’t think he has that kind of potential. I think we will regret not trading him for a haul in a few years when he’s a mid-tier starter with nice playmaking and defense and a shaky jumper.

Currently he's got flaws in his game. Hopefully, Scottie is a good influence on him to improve his efficiency on offense. 27% usage stops immediately.

For those that watch a lot of Knick’s games could somebody give a more detailed breakdown of his game.

I’m more excited about IQ.

I hope we flip RJ next year or something. Unless he really grows and becomes elite at something.

It’s obvious he seems really happy coming here, and I watched a lot of fiba basketball. The guy was solid. The inconsistency could very well be because he wasn’t happy or didn’t have a spark with Knicks. Here he will definitely have more juice. When he’s doing good, he’s GOOD.

I like to think of it like this, he’s a better offensive player than OG (minus the 3 ball) that’s for sure, and although OG is a top defender in the league, RJ is a solid wing defender. so u don’t lose much

I hope he turns things around here.

I kinda think an expiring would actually have been better, but maybe that's the point. The cost of doing business. It's not an albatross or anything, but it's not great. Maybe I'm wrong and you could just find a team willing to trade expirings for it at any point.

He's a negative impact player as it stands, and while 25-30 million might be the going rate for an average starter, I don't think that's what he is. He has the potential to be more than that and will be happy to be here, so that's something.
